0 wring an ethnic restau-
rant and having a thirst
for authenticity is one
thing . . . Doing some-
thing to satisfy that desire is the
ballgame's winning run.
Neng Hang opened Bangkok
Hung Cafe on Sept. 9 in Sunset
Strip, on Northwestern High-
way between 12 Mile and
Inkster, with a fervent purpose
in mind . . . Already the owner
of a successful Chinese restau-
rant, Szechuan Garden in Troy,
he also wanted a small place
that would concentrate on au-
thentic dishes of Thailand.
Getting the former Ramone's
Cafe and changing its interior
decor beyond recognition wasn't
enough . . . So he sent brother
Xeng, who cooks and operates
the restaurant with Neng's
brother-in-law, Fue Kui, also
a chef, to Bangkok, Thailand,
to find out the special sauces
used in different dishes, and
why one of the restaurants
there, a famous one, was so pop-
ular.
Xeng discovered that a lot of
the specialties may be the same
and sound the same with the
same name, but they are actu-
ally a lot different in America
because of the authentic sauces
used in Thailand.
The result is that Xeng and
Fue now prepare most of the
Thai food with authentic,
health-favoring sauces that are
making Bangkok Hung a fa-
vorite place to go.
One of the features, called
Rainbow Special, cannot be got-
ten at any other Thai restau-
rant, says Neng . . . It's a seafood
dish served at dinner that has
shrimp, scallops and lobster,
with peapods, sweet red and
yellow peppers in a ginger and
garlic sauce ($13.95) . . . The
Bangkok Hung exclusive in-
cludes steamed rice and appe-
tizer of Nong Tong, five chicken
wings golden fried with garlic
and black pepper.
Bangkok Hung's interesting
dishes also include dinner items
not found on the menu . . . Like
General Chicken, $8.25, breast
of chicken rolled into balls and
served with a garlic sauce.
The menu, with its large va-
riety of selections, also features
five vegetarian dishes ... Every-
thing at lunch or dinner is made
with vegetable oil . . . no lard.
There is a big concentration
at Bangkok Hung on two more
things . . . healthy, low-fat food
. . . and as-you-desire prepara-
ton of everything . . . mild, medi-
Fue Kui and Neng Hang of Bangkok Hung.
urn or spicy.
Sunset Strip provides a lot of
parking, but it isn't needed for
Bangkok Hung, which seats
only about 47 at seven booths
and five tables.
The transition from Ra-
mone's to Bangkok Hung is
striking . . . bamboo shades be-
tween the booths, colorful fan-
like shades over lights on the
ceiling, bamboo lattice work in
windows that face Northwest-
ern, black tables and booths,
large open fans on the green
walls, lanterns over booths,
bamboo and colored glass
shades, etc.
Neng's popular Szechuan
Garden, which opened in 1987,
is on W. Maple and Coolidge in
Troy, serving Szechuan and
Mandarin specialties . . . He
knows how to run a successful
dining operation . . . With the
addition of Bangkok Hung,
Neng divides his time between
the two places, and leaves very
little doubt that the same suc-
cess pattern won't follow.
Bangkok Hung Cafe in Sun-
set Strip is open seven days,
Monday-Thursday, 11:30 a.m.
to 10 p.m.; Friday and Satur-
day, 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and
Sunday, 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
. . . Szechuan Garden has the
same hours.
Oakland County Health De-
partment score is a good 85 per-
cent.
It is interesting to note some
of the dishes at Bangkok Hung
have the same price at both
lunch and dinner ... something
rarely found in a restaurant.
Its most popular item, Pud
Thai, $5.95, is in this category
. . . rice noodles with bean
sprouts, eggs and green onions
. . . $6.95 with chicken, beef or
shrimp . . . Also Pud Se' Ewew,
sauteed rice noodles with broc-
coli and eggs, $5.95, and $6.95
with chicken, beef or shrimp
. . . Some favorites, like the nine
seafood specialties and duck fea-
tures, can be gotten only at din-
ner.
The menu choice is literally
bigger than the restaurant .. .
over 70 entrees, five salads, four
appetizers, two soups, three
desserts.
Sending brother Xeng to
Bangkok to bring back authen-
ticity has proven to be a major
move . . . Customers who know
the difference have discovered
what they now consider a little
gem with a bright sparkle.
Bangkok Hung is the kind of
informal neighborhood Thai
restaurant that many have
been seeking.
