The Michigan Jewish Sports
Hall of Fame (MJSHF) and The
Jewish News have announced
the winners of the 1993 Jewish
High School Athlete of the Year
Awards. Beth Peisner and
Craig Colton, both of Bloomfield
Hills, will be honored at the
Hall of Fame Induction Ban-
quet Nov. 1 at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek.
Mr. Colton, a recent gradu-
ate of Andover High School, was
a four-year letter winner in golf
and was co-captain of the 1992
team which won the State Class
B championship. He also was
the gold medal winner for his
age group in the 1990 Maccabi
Games. He graduated from
high school with a 3.7 grade
point average and is now at-
tending the University of Michi-
gan.
Ms. Peisner won 11 varsity
letters in four sports while at-
tending Detroit Country Day
School; she was on the ski team
for four years, the soccer team
for four years, the tennis team
for two years and the basketball
team for one year. In her senior
year she was co-captain of both
the ski and soccer varsities. She
is now a freshman at the Uni-
versity of Wisconsin.
The two winners were se-
lected from a group of athletes
nominated by metropolitan
area athletic directors. To be el-
igible, the candidates had to be
9-12th grade students compet-
ing in recognized sports and in
good standing in their high
school.
A plaque listing their names
will be displayed in the Hall of
Fame at the Jewish Commu-
nity Center in West Bloomfield.

Family Mission
Set For Dec. 22

Children celebrating their bar
or bat mitzvah may travel free
when their families join the
United Jewish Appeal National
Winter Family Mission to Israel
Dec. 22-31.
Co-sponsored by the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan De-
troit, the mission is available to
parents, children and grand-
parents. It offers special events,
such as planting trees in Israel,
visiting Youth Aliyah villages
and vocational retraining pro-
grams, and meeting kibbutz-
niks, soldiers and Israeli
families. Included are special
youth programs designed to
meet the needs of children from
age 7 to adult.
While in Jerusalem, partici-
pants will be briefed by gov-
ernment leaders on key issues
related to the peace process, the
absorption of immigrants and
Israel's economic needs.
Mission-goers also will get an
in-depth look at Israel today.
They will visit new immigrants
at absorption centers and learn
about resettlement.
The missions include round-
trip air fare from New York,
deluxe accommodations (dou-
ble occupancy), transportation,
guides, gratuities and most
meals. Bar and bat mitzvah
children of families participat-
ing in the mission travel free.
For details about the UJA
National Winter Family Mis-
sion to Israel, call Leonard Mil-
stone, 642-4260. ❑

When people talk about a
wealthy man of my creed,
they call him an Israelite;
but if he is poor they call him
a Jew.
