Reva Shwayder

Reva Shwayder Gothelf, 91, of
Franklin, died Aug. 26. She
was the subject of a documen-
tary film, Young At Heart,
that won an Academy Award.
Ms. Shwayder was married
for 62 years to Benjamin
Shwayder, who with his four
brothers founded the Sam-
sonite Corporation.
In 1950, Ms. Shwayder
became a painter, doing large
works in acrylics and water-
colors that featured bright
flowers and landscapes in an
abstract style. She sold her
works to private collectors
and corporate clients in-
cluding Ford, Chrysler, IBM
and Kresge, as well as the
Detroit Institute of Arts and
the Pennsylvania Academy of
Arts.
Her husband died in 1981
and five years later she mar-
ried Louis Gothelf, a painter.
She is survived by her hus-
band, Louis; daughters-in-
law, Joann Shwayder Clay-
man, Elizabeth Shwayder
Kelly; stepdaughter, Sue
(Stanley) Marx; sister, Ann
Klein of Laguna Beach,
Calif.; six grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren.

10 a.m. Tuesday for that
week's issue. They can be
faxed. The fax number is

The city of Newark at one
time had a Jewish popula-
tion of almost 100,000. By
the 1960s, the number had
shrunk to less than 10,000,
as the majority of Jews mov-
ed to the suburbs. Today,
only some 100 elderly Jews
still live in the city.
