against Alzheimer's disease
. . . Registration is 8:45 a.m.
followed by the walk at 9:45
a.m. . . . "Walk With The
Animals" is by Detroit
Chapter of Alzheimer's
Association and open to all
. . . Minimum of $35 in
pledges, or a $25 donation is
requested plus the $5
registration fee . . . A face
painter will be there for the
kids, aerobic exercising to
prepare walkers, and serving
of healthy snacks.

RECENTLY VISITING

the Detroit area, former
localite Maurey Pastor, presi-
dent of the Detroit Vegas
Club, has untold memories
about the area he left in 1962
when moving to California
and then Las Vegas in 1977
with his late wife, Etta.
He recalled when the fee for
joining Tam O'Shanter Coun-
try Club during the '50s was
$1400 and Ed Rose under-
writing the mortage for a
group purchasing the club
from the Fisher brothers.
Maurey graduated from
Central High, June 1927, and
was in the new school's third
class after its opening in ear-
ly 1926 . . . He is retired and
active in mortgage financing
following a career in construc-
tion and publishing.

REID ASHTON, president
and co-owner of Golden
Mushroom, which he opened
in 1972 on W. 10 Mile and
Southfield, was recently
elected to the National
Restaurant Association board
of directors . . . It is the
largest trade group represen-
ting the food industry, with
18,000 member companies
operating 150,000 establish-
ments nationwide.
Reid is an executive board
member and past president of
the Michigan Restaurant
Association . . . For the 1993-
1994 term, he'll serve on
the national association's
Research, Convention and
Government Relations
Committee.
50 YEARS AGO, localites
Max Gurman and Frank
Winton played together as a
team, winning the Michigan
State junior title for 18-year-
olds . . A couple of years ago
they teamed again to win the
Wesern 75s Doubles
Championship.
A singles champ for many
moons, Max is now 80 and
continuing to garner more
net titles with his still always
smooth and steady strokes.
On the Detroit Tennis Club
courts, he teamed with Bill
Wendt of Chicago to win the
Western Closed 80s Super
Seniors tennis championship
. . . In singles Max was

runner-up, reaching the finals
by defeating the number one
seeded player.
When he was 13 years old,
Max won the Detroit Boys
Championship . . . and at 15
was 10th in the national boys
rankings . . . He went on to
win the Detroit City title
seven times, the Michigan
State singles and doubles,
and the Michigan Inter-
Collegiate title while captain
at Western Michigan.
Max continued to the finals
in the U.S. Air Force world-
wide, and was captain of the
Air Force tennis team in the
South Pacific that played
against a fine Australian
Davis Cup team.
This September, he will be
playing in the National 80s
Super Senior championships
at the Army and Navy Club
in Alexandria, Va.

made for his and wife Carole's
recent Francaise Extraor-
dinaire at their Tassos
Epicurean Cuisine on The
Boardwalk, Orchard Lake Rd.
south of Maple.
Saumon Cru Au Aneth,
marinated salmon with
avocado and grapefruit sec-
tions; Supreme de Pintadeau
aux Ecrevisses, breast of
Guinea hen stuffed with
shrimp and served with
peapods and vegetables
julienne in brandied veal
sauce; Salade Gourmande,
mixed greens, romaine, frisee,
red oak garnished with
gorgonzola and toasted
pecans; Trophe Cointreau,
white and dark chocolate
mousse layered with ground
almond torte encased in
ladyfingers and served with
creme anglaise.
Complete dinner at their
little cafe, including coffee or
tea and tax, was $28.50 per
person . . . Tassos is a Cordon
Bleu culinary graduate with
the French style of glamorous
food and presentation.
THIS THURSDAY, 7:30
p.m., will be the Max Sosin
one-man show rib-tickler at
Congregation B'nai David on
Southfield, south of 10 Mile,
to raise funds for Jewish Na-
tional Fund . . . Each $15 ad-
