Laborites Assailed
By Jewish Settlers

Jerusalem (JTA) — A group
of Labor Knesset members
who visited the West Bank
settlement of Kedumim this
week found themselves in a
bitter confrontation with
settlers.
The settlers attacked the
representatives of the
governing party, saying they
felt like second-class citizens
whose interests in the region
had been delegitimized.
Eli Dayan, the Knesset
caucus whip, told them that
while they had enjoyed a
favorable status under the

previous government, they
were now enjoying the same
rights as all other Israelis.
In the past, said Mr.
Dayan, the government had
injected billions of shekels
into the territories, and in
the process had deprived
cities and towns elsewhere
in Israel of funds they
rightfully deserved.
The visit by represent-
atives of the Labor govern-
ment was unusual, and the
hostile reception they
received could hardly be
termed unexpected.
Since taking power last
year, Labor has been for-
thright in its opposition to
the construction of new set-
tlements in the territories
for political purposes — a
bulwark of the strategy
employed by the previous
Likud government.
Likud viewed the building
of new settlements as a
means for creating "facts on
the ground" that would af-
fect all future negotiations
with their Arab neighbors
regarding disputed ter-
ritories.
During the visit, Mr.
Dayan asked the settlers

whether they would accept
the rule of the majority of
Israelis on the fate of the
territories.
A rabbi from among the
settlers who attended the
meeting replied that under
certain circumstances one
need not adhere to majority
rule.
Labor Knesset member
Ephraim Sneh received a
predictably angry response
when he told the settlers
that had they not been there,
negotiations with the Arabs
would have been much
easier.
The visit to Kedumim was
the third time this week that
settlers in the territories
heard unwelcome tidings
from government officials.
Earlier this week, Housing
Minister Binyamin Ben-
Eliezer rejected a demand
that the government sub-
sidize the sale of 400,000
housing units in the ter-
ritories.
He insisted that the units
be sold on the free market,
as was the case anywhere
else in the country.
And President Ezer Weiz-
man, during another address
to a group of settlers, said
that they should be willing
to accept the rule of the
majority, even if the
majority makes some deci-
sions the settlers might
deem unwelcome.
