days I'm on the phone con-
stantly, all day long. I just
push buttons from one to
the next."
The Perles controversy
was "very difficult,"
Hoffman recalls. "Your
personal feelings can get
in the way of what your
professional responsibili
ties are. But that was diffi-
cult for the whole universi-
ty. And it was very unfor-
tunate because I think in
the big picture it was
made to be a much bigger
item than it really
deserved to be. This uni-
versity is much, much
more than whether or not
someone is holding down
two jobs."
Today, Hoffman works
for one of the nation's few
women athletic directors,
Merrily Dean Baker.
"A lot of us hand to get
used to that new notion
that a woman is running
the department," Hoffman
admits. "But once you're
past that, it's the same
business at hand and it's
the same goals and objec-
tives that we all share. So,
while it is very rare, it
doesn't change the day-to-
day responsibilities."
Hoffman admits that he
has larger "aspirations,"
including the goal of
becoming the "athletic
director of a major pro-
gram."
But for now he's happy
at MSU, taking things one
day at a time. ❑
