Reiner, "but my marks in
high school weren't good
enough to get into college."
Instead, Mr. Reiner made
the grade in the Army, as a
member of a G.I. drama
troupe headed by Maurice
Evans. It was the beginning
of a career in service to the
arts.
Even Dad was impresssed.
"My father was happy that I
became an actor but the only
problem was he wanted to
know why I had to go away for
my career; why couldn't I play
in the neighborhood?"
Home or away, Carl
Reiner has done well. There
are even plans to revive and
record the ageless
"2,000-year-old-man" shtick
he co-created with Mel
Brooks.
"Do you know how that
happened?" he says of the
roots of the routine. "It
happened because I was mad
about something and walked
into a room, turned to Mel
and started interviewing
him. I asked him one ques-
tion" and they were off and
running for 10 years.
Four hit recordings later,
the "2,000 year old man" —
with Brooks as the precious
and prescient living legend
— became a classic.
The past provides a
plethora of possibilities for
Mr. Reiner and other former
colleagues. Indeed, Neil
Simon, one of Reiner's
"Your Show of Shows"
mishpocah, is bringing his
latest show, Laughter on the
23rd Floor, to Broadway this
fall. The comedy focuses on
the crazy cast of characters
who made "Your Show of
Shows" such a winner.
"I was sometimes the
`voice' of Neil," recalls Mr.
Reiner. "He was quiet and
liked to sit next to me" at
staff meetings, where
Simon, ever so shy, would
sometimes whisper his ideas
and bits to Mr. Reiner, who
would yell out and bring at-
tention to them amid the
chaos.
Those were the days.
"Your Show of Shows" "had
a special magic," says Mr.
Reiner. "It was a time when
`neatness' didn't count as
much," when flubs — few
though they were — went
out live on the air.
While the past evokes a
treasure chest of memories,
Carl Reiner also treasures
what he is doing now —pro-
moting his new book, and
directing ing the film Fatal

Instinct.

"I guess I could have been
a doctor,"he said a while
back. "After all, I like caring
for people." ❑
