Project JOIN
Is Showing Success
*VC 11-
Stacy Weinberg and Beth Cousens, JOIN interns at the Jewish Federation and
the Jewish Communtiy Council, discuss volunteer recruitment with Debra
Silver, who oversees the Jewish Vocational Service program.
More than a dozen young
people have joined the
world of Jewish communal
professionals as they work
with and learn about the
Jewish community of
Detroit this summer. As
part of the Jeanette and
Oscar Cook Jewish
Occupational Intern (JOIN)
Program, 16 college stu-
dents are interning at sev-
eral area Jewish communal
agencies.
Supervised by Jewish
Vocational Service (JVS),
JOIN provides students
with the opportunity to
experience possible careers
in Jewish communal service
and to recruit educated
young people to work in the
community as professionals
or volunteer leaders.
The program, which
helps students focus on
their educational and pro-
fessional - goals, places
interns in agencies for eight
weeks according to their
interests. Interns work
closely with professionals
on a wide range of commu-
nity concerns, problems and
projects. They spend four
days each week at their
assignment and attend day-
long seminars on Fridays.
Organized by the JVS
staff, the seminars include
overviews of area agencies,
tours of local facilities and
discussions of current
issues. They include in-
depth discussions of com-
munal history, as well as
current and future chal-
lenges in the Jewish com-
munity.
In addition, time is set
aside weekly for the interns
to share and assess their
internship experiences.
The Jeanette and Oscar
Cook JOIN program is
funded through the Jewish
Occupational Intern
Endowment Fund and pri-
vate contributions, and sup-
ported in part by the Allied
Jewish Campaign allocation
to Jewish Vocational
Service.
