AWARD
Elina Zilberberg, Volunteer Services
Program Manager for Jewish Family
Service and Resettlement Service, recently
accepted, on behalf of Resettlement
Service, the 3rd annual Phil Soskis
Memorial Award . The award is presented
by the Jewish Family and Childrens'
Service Professional Association for
"Outstanding Accomplishments in Service
to New Americans". The award was pre-
sented at the recent annual conference of
the association in Washington D.C.
Elina was commended for her role in
organizing Project Opportunity, a pro-
gram, which is sponsored in cooperation
with the Jewish Community Council, and
offers apprenticeship opportunities for
new American teens. Project Opportunity
provides a structure for new American
teens to learn about the free enterprise sys-
tem, the business world and to explore
various career options.
Everyone in Jewish Family Service and
Resettlement Service congratulates Elina
on this significant honor.
ment to the JFS Board of Directors, the
family of the late Mary Lakoff recently
established a name fund in her memory.
This fund will support programming,
retreats and seminars to promote board
development. The programming will edu-
cate the JFS Board about how best to
achieve success and issue policy decisions
which will guide the agency into the 21st
century. Mary Lakoff, who passed away
during the past year, is remembered for
her long association with the agency. A
past president of the agency, Mrs. Lakoff
chaired several board committees and was
a continuing source of guidance to the
agency during its years of tremendous
change and growth.
On September 12, the JFS Board of
Directors will gather for its first annual
retreat made possible through the
resources of the Lakoff fund. The fea-
tured speaker will be Lucy Y. Steinitz,
Ph.D., Executive Director of the Jewish
Family Service of Baltimore. Dr. Steinitz
will engage the board in a process for rein-
forcing the agency's role and understand-
ing its unique mission.
...FROM THE WAREHOUSE
The Resettlement Service Warehouse, located at Northland Center, is desperately
in need of garbage hauling services on a monthly basis. This will enable the hard
working volunteers to clear out unusable packing boxes and other items that accumu-
late there. If you can fill this need, please contact Elina Zilberberg, Volunteer
Services at 559-4046.
Thanks to the generosity of our Jewish community, the warehouse continues to
provide new Americans with household items and furniture in good repair. If you
are interested in donating to the warehouse, please contact Susan Ulanoff, Donations
Liaison at 559-4566.
