Sabra Woman
Is Ordained

Jerusalem (JTA) — The first
native-born Israeli woman to
be ordained a rabbi in Israel
will receive her smicha next
week by the Reform move-
ment.
Maya Leibowitz, 46, a
second-generation Israeli,
will be ordained during a
festive ceremony July 14
along with two other
graduates of Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of
Religion in Jerusalem who
are from Holland and
Argentina.
HUC's president, Rabbi
Alfred Gottschalk, and
members of the Conference
of Presidents of Major Jew-
ish Organizations in
America will come to Israel
especially for this occasion.
Mrs. Leibowitz is the se-
cond woman to be ordained
in Israel but the first sabra.
American-born Naamah
Kelman, the first, was or-
dained last year by HUC.
Married and a mother of
three, Rabbi Kelman lives in
Jerusalem, where she is in
charge of education for
Israelis under the Reform
movement, part of the TALI
alternative school system.
Another native Israeli,
Einat Ramon, was the first
Israeli woman ordained as a
rabbi, but was given her
smicha in New York by the
Jewish Theological Semi-
nary of America, the rab-
binical and Jewish studies
institute of the Conservative
Movement.
In 1990, JTS ordained a
second Israeli woman, Gila
Dror, as a rabbi. She now
has a congregation, Eshel
Avraham, in Beersheba.
Rabbi Gottschalk, the
HUC president, announced
that Mrs. Leibowitz's or-
dination would "begin a new
era in the attitude of many
Israelis to Progressive and
Reform Judaism in Israel."
Mrs. Leibowitz, a teacher
and graduate of the Hebrew
University in Jewish
thought, is married and the
mother of four. She has
worked for the past two
decades as a tourist guide.
Two other graduates of
HUC who will receive their
rabbinical ordination at this
year's ceremony are Reuven
Bar-Ephraim, 34, who im-
migrated from Amsterdam
in 1978; and Sergio
Bergman, 31, of Buenos
Aires.
Some 1,500 rabbis — men
and women — presently
serve in Reform Jewish
communities throughout the
world.
