Until
Express made the sug-
gestion, there was no
established music for
Gymboree, an interna-
tional enterprise that
teaches movement and
play techniques to par-
ents and their preschool-
ers.
Walt Disney Records
picked up on the trio's
talents and released the
group's records on the
Disney label. "We didn't
want the music to be
exclusively for the
under-5 age group," Mr.
Becker said. "We wanted
children to be able to
grow up with our music,
experiencing it different-
ly at different ages."
For family appeal and
general classroom use,
the group works at creat-
ing songs with sophisti-
cation, special harmonies
and full instrumentation.
"In concerts, we see
that 2-and 3-year-olds
are jumping up and
down, not yet connected
with the lyrics," Mr.
Becker said. "The 4-, S-
and 6-year-olds begin to
pick up the humor and
the subtleties."
Mr. Becker attributes
the group's success to
individual background
experiences that gave
them insight into the
kinds of songs that
appeal to youngsters.
A former teacher and
school director, Mr.
Becker worked for a

munity center, first as a
camp counselor and later
assuming leadership of
family and children's
entertainment program-
ming for the United
Jewish Community
Centers Association. He
also sang folk music in
clubs.
After getting the idea
to compose music for
Gymboree, Mr. Becker
asked his neighbor and
close friend, Mr.
Schwartz, to join him.
The son of a nursery
school administrator,
Mr. Schwartz started
acting in films when he
was 12 and worked on
TV series. His original
songs have been per-
formed by Barry
Manilow and the Fifth
Dimension.
Ms. Hubbard was
brought into the group
by Mr. Schwartz. The
daughter of a music
teacher, she was trained
classically and per-
formed in New York
clubs. She has recorded
with Dennis Wilson of
the Beach Boys and has
had her own music per-
formed by the Fifth
Dimension and Robben
Ford.
The group's name is an
outgrowth of a Gymboree
activity — Parachute
Music Time, when par-
ents and children sit on
a parachute as they sing.
"Our children are very
involved with our music,
and they have been an
inspiration," said Mr.
Becker, who, like Mr.
Schwartz, is the father of
two. "I Can Do That," a
song of self-esteem, came
about after the two men
overheard their sons.
The day before their
Michigan concert, the
Parachute Express will
sing the national anthem
at Tiger Stadium.
"We've done the
anthem in other stadi-
ums, and it's a thrill,"
Mr. Becker said. "Both
Stephen and I are sports
nuts so to actually stand
in places where the great
baseball players stood is
fun for us."
Parachute Express will
perform at 1 and 5 p.m.
July 20 at the Pine Knob
Music Theatre. For infor-
mation, call 377-0100.
