Project Discovery is the
Jewish community's semes-
ter-in-Israel program for high
school students in 10th and
11th grades.
Beginning in February and
ending in June, students in
the four-year-old program
take classes in Judaic studies,
Hebrew, geography and his-
tory of Israel, in addition to
courses required by the
American high schools. Arts
and crafts, music and other
activities are also available.
Administered by the Israel
Desk of the Jewish Federa-
tion and the Agency for
Jewish Education, the pro-
gram allows participants to
join with their Israeli peers
and students from around the
world in local community ser-
vice projects.
Fees for the semester in-
clude tuition, room and
board, tours, seminars and a
comprehensive health/hospi-
talization plan. Not included
are the cost of textbooks,
pocket money, airfare, dental
care, elective surgery, in-
surance on personal belong-
ings and a $50 non-refund-
able registration fee. Par-
ticipants from the Detroit
Jewish community may be
eligible for a Jewish Federa-
tion subsidy.
A weekend retreat for local
participants will precede the
beginning of the program.
Directed by Sivan Maas, the
community shlicha, the Israel
Desk is a resource for travel
and educational opportuni-
ties in Israel and scholarship
information. The office pro-
vides a variety of locally and
nationally sponsored travel,
study and volunteer pro-
grams for people of all ages.
