Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel Air-
craft Industries has unveiled
a new night-vision system
for U.S. Cobra attack
helicopters. The system is
already being used in Cobras
belonging to the Israeli air
force.
The system, a joint effort
by the Israeli air force and
the U.S. Marine Corps, will
also be fitted to Marine
Corps Cobras at the end of
this year.
The Night Targeting
System, as it is called, will
enable the craft to fire mis-
siles at night with daytime
accuracy, according to an
IAI spokesman.
Approximately $150 mill-
ion has been invested in the
project since 1988.
IDF air force procurement
division head Brig. Gen.
Amnon Harari said at the
unveiling ceremony that the
electro- optic system has
been "a great success which,
from an operational point of
view, is only the beginning."
"By using the new system,
the air force will be able to
exploit the Cobra's true
potential," Brig. Gen.
Harari said.
Moshe Keret, IAI director-
general, said, "We feel we
have developed a gcod pro-
duct, within a set budget,
and with cooperation bet-
ween Israeli and American
industries."
He said IAI is developing a
number of other joint pro-
ducts with the United
States.
Col. Curtis Crews, U.S.
program manager for armed
helicopters, said that the
system "exceeded the
greatest expectations."
