Patrick Burton: Writer, actor.

I

n the darkened theater
a list of names is read,
complete with dates of
birth and death — gay
Jews who perished in the
concentration camps of
Nazi Germany. On stage, a
woman holds the picture of
a gay Jewish survivor.
The name Patrick
Burton is heard, no date.
The lights come up and
Patrick Burton, perfor-
mance artist, is intro-
duced, along with Patrick
Burton, character — gay,
Jewish, Holocaust sur-
vivor.
Such is the beginning of
a tale of two times. Until,
Mr. Burton's most recent
work as writer, actor and
producer, tells two stories.
1940s Europe is por-
trayed through the experi-
ence of a gay Jew surviv-
ing in a concentration
camp. He is forced to wear
the pink triangle over the
yellow star of David. The
struggle against the mod-
ern-day killer, AIDS, is
explored through Dwight,
an HIV-positive white man
and his black, HIV-nega-
tive lover.
minute
Several
vignettes are separated
with blackness and
silence, denoting the
change in era. Writings
from The Diary of Anne
Frank and the character
Dwight's own journal
serve as voiceovers; Anne's
writings ending with
"Yours, Anne," Dwight's

with "Until."
"For me, 'until' means
something is going to hap-
pen. It's a way of antici-
pating the future — posi-
tively," Mr. Burton said.
In preparation for the
piece, Mr. Burton inter-
viewed gay survivors and
read everything about the
Holocaust he could get his
hands on. The Diary of
Anne Frank remains the
most poignant piece about
the time for Mr. Burton.
"Of all the written histo-
ry of this time, her journal
is the most significant to
me," he said. "Her diary so
beautifully depicts the
misery and horror. Today,
her writing brings new
light and vision to the hor-
ror of AIDS.
"She still believed in life
and in sustaining life. She
still found nature beauti-

ful. The character Dwight
is the same way. Even
though he knows he is
dying, he remembers to
appreciate the light of
day."
Mr. Burton views Until
as a healing piece, a play
for all people to see and
understand.
"It's a piece about love.
It's not the amount of time
we have, but what we
believe in and how we live
our lives," he said.
The lights dim and
another list is read — peo-
ple of Detroit who have
died from AIDS. Women
hold their pictures, too.
Until will be performed
at 1515 Broadway in
Detroit at 9 p.m. June 18,
19, 25, 26 and July 2 and
3, and at 8 p.m. June 20,
and July 4. Advance
t. -..kets are $10, $12.50 at
tik door. ❑
