For nearly 40 years, Jackson Lake
Lodge in northwestern Wyoming
has played host to the countless
travelers who come to this corner
of the world to enjoy and learn
about two of America's greatest
treasures— Grand Teton National
Park, where the lodge is actually
located, and Yellowstone, some 20
miles away. Jackson Lake Lodge is
situated in the valley of Jackson
Hole across Jackson Lake from the
base of the Grand Tetons. The
Tetons are a comparatively small
range— only about 40 miles long
and 15 wide. There are 19 major
peaks, and only one of them, Grand
Teton, exceeds 13,000 feet But the
emotional impact of this glorious
range certainly meets or exceeds
that of any other in the U.S. The
snowcapped peaks seem to rise di-
rectly from the ground like a sky-
scraper from a city street
The Jackson Lake Lodge com-
plex affords an affordable view of it
all. The main lodge is a comfort-
able, rustic, outdoorsy place with
38 room& An assortment of motor-
lodge units in the surrounding
complex provide an additional 347
rooms. The entire lodge has been
entirely refurbished over the past
four years, so guests can count on
bright furnishings (with a subtle
Western theme) and updated
baths. All accommodations are
moderately priced, which may ex-
plain why this place attracts so
many families.
The lodge's main dining room
can seat 300. In addition to vast ex-
panses of picture windows onto the
Grand Tetons, the decor in both
the dining room and the adjacent
main lounge feature western mu-
rals by Carl Roters and animal
paintings by Carl Rungius.
There is no shortage of things to
do at Jackson Lake Lodge. Guests
Ike the guided fishing trips on Jack-
son Lake, fly fishing on the Snake
River, and the lake cruises— par-
.ticularly the Elk Island Steak-Fry
Cruise. They rent motor boats, row
boats and canoes at the marina on
Jackson Lake; they saddle up for
breakfast trail rides and evening
horseback outings on the moun-
tain trails. The exceedingly popu-
lar raft trips on the Snake River are
billed as "scenic" to distinguish
them from the more exciting white-
waterversions that can be found
south of the town of Jackson Hole,
35 miles from the lodge.
In the evenings in July and Au-
gust, the hotel offers western
swing, square dancing lessons, and
the National Park Service presents
programs on local wildlife, flora and
fauna. Other activities include the
aerial tram ride based in Teton Vil-
lage and, of course, a visit to near-
by Yellowstone.
Jackson Lake Lodge is the in-
spiration of the Rockefeller family.
Although it was built in the 1950s,
its story dates to 1926, when Mr.
and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Jr.
visited Yellowstone with their sons,
Laurance, Winthrop and David.
The family was mightily impressed
with Yellowstone, which had been
established in 1872 as the world's
first national park. But when the
park superintendent showed them
the spectacular Jackson Hole Val-
ley, they were profoundly moved.
To save the area from inevitable
commercialization, Rockefeller be-
gan buying up land that he even-

government Despite fiery local op-
position, he continued buying land
for 20 years. Then, in 1950, he gave
32,000 acres of mountains, lakes,
streams, rivers and valleys to be in-
corporated into what today is
Grand Teton National Park.
Completed and dedicated by
Laurence Rockefeller in 1955, Jack-
son Lake Lodge became part of the
famed Rockresorts groups, resorts
in breathtakingly beautiful spots
around the world that came to sym
bolize a unique blend of quality ac-
cormnodations and environmental
preservations. Rockresorts was
sold to Richmond-based CSX Cor-
poration in 1986, and today Jack-
son Lake Lodge is managed by the
same CSX subsidiary that operates
the Greenbrier in White Sulphur
Springs, Virginia.
