SHOPPING FOR
SWIMSUITS

OK, so you don't look like a
model for Sports Illustrated's
celebrated swimsuit issue.
Take heart As swimsuit season
approaches, statistics are on
your side. The baby boom gen-
eration is aging and, like every-
thing else, influencing
swimwear manufacturers.
You'll find plenty of options
with built-in bras for more sup-
port, extra Lycra to hold every-
thing in place and details such
as little skirts for more cover-
age. And they don't look like
something your grandmother
would wear (though, come to
think of it, she'd probably pre-
fer something more stylish,
too).
Of course, shopping for a
bathing suit still can be torture.
Looking good is, of course, a
major issue, but so is comfort.
You want to do more than
lounge prettily by the pool. You
want to be able to walk around,
swim, maybe even play a game
of volleyball without having
your suit ride up, pinch or oth-
erwise reveal more than you
want it to.
Shopping for a new swimsuit
can be less arduous if you
know how to go about it.
• Shop when you have plen-
ty of time.
• Shop at a store that offers
plenty of selection, decent
dressing rooms and trained
staff. Knowledgeable staff know
how the different swimwear
lines fit. Also shop where there
is a good selection of suits for
you. The little bikini shop by
the beach might have tons of
options for nubile teen-agers,
but it might not have what you
want.
• Try on lots of different
styles.
• Don't pay attention to the
size on the label. Dress size
and bathing suit size often
don't correlate. Buy what fits.
• Know what you'll need the
bathing suit for. If you plan to
sunbathe on a cruise ship, you
can opt for something with
unusual details, fabrics and cut.
But if you want to do some seri-
ous swimming or scuba diving,
look for a suit that's more func-
tional.
• Move around when you try
on a bathing suit. Bend over; sit
on the floor; lift up your arms
