For 45 Years, People Have
Been Investing in Israel.

the Lembergs live in the
United States or Israel.
Eugene in 1959 married
Gail Werber — "Instead
of flowers, I used to give
her radishes. She just
loved radishes" — and the
couple have two sons and
a daughter.
The Rice brothers
stayed in Detroit for some
time after the store
closed, then moved to
Florida. Today, Howard is
an attorney; Irving is a
private investor and
Wilbur is a teacher.
Both Howard and his
brother Irving have two
children. Until now, they
had never seen the
Detroit News article about
their father.
Neither Howard Rice
nor Eugene Lemberg sees
much of the old property,
though Howard will drive
by on occasion when in
Detroit.
"I haven't been there
since the store was torn
down," Eugene says. "I
have no reason to go
back."
At least the memories
and the photos remain.
And the Detroit News
article. Amid a house
filled with stuffed ani-
mals, children's books (all
for the grandchildren)
and countless family pho-
tos, there hangs in a
prominent place in the
Lemberg home a copy of a
story headlined, "Mem-
ories of Pogrom Horrors
Fade for Two In Detroit:
Fled Massacres, Landed
Penniless, Now Head
Thriving Business Here." ❑

Prison Plan
Draws Fire

Jerusalem (JTA) — Tourism
Minister Uzi Baram has
come out in opposition to a
plan to convert a former
Israeli army command
headquarters in Nazareth
into a prison for as many as
1,000 inmates.
The Nazareth City Council
has been fighting the plan,
charging it would taint the
city's image as a holy place
of pilgrimage. The
legislative body has
threatened to bring the Vat-
ican into the fray if need be.
