Monster Cable President
Noel Lee of San Francisco
heard many times he
wouldn't make it in Israel.
He did. And he did big.
"I was right and they
were wrong," the inventor
of high-end specialty audio
cable products told the 70
people in the audience.
The company he founded
in the late 1970s as a two-
person operation that he
ran out of his home has
soared in a decade to one
boasting more than $20
million in annual sales. In
1979, he discovered the
performance variations
that result when someone
changes configurations of
wires hooked to loudspeak-
ers.
From that came pack-
aged Monster Cable prod-
ucts and opportunities in
the consumer electronics
marketplace. The company
offers a line of more than
300 consumer audio prod-
ucts that can be found in
electronics stores in just
about every state.
In 1989, while looking
into opening a European
plant to help with world-
wide sales, he met Israeli
Shalom Green and asked
him to head European
operations.
Mr. Green suggested
placing the facility in
Israel, now home to
Monster's international
manufacturing and distrib-
ution center. Mr. Lee now
sells his cable in 50 coun-
tries, with international
offices in Migdal Haemek,
25 miles from Haifa.
"I saw hidden benefits
there," Mr. Lee said. "And I
saw an entrepreneurial
spirit that was unmatched
anywhere."
During the Gulf War,
Mr. Lee sent a fax to his
Israeli counterpart, sug-
gesting employees go home
and take care of their fami-
lies.
"I got a fax back saying
that a few bombs never
could hurt us," he said.
Also at the conference,
United Jewish Appeal
President Joel Tauber did
a pitch for UJA and, at the
same time, told his own
Israel business story. The
Detroit businessman man-
ufactures water coolers in
Israel through a joint ven-
ture with a kibbutz and
one of his companies, Reed
Plastics.
Philanthropy is impor-
tant, Mr. Tauber said, but
he added, "I like profit."
In Israel, he and the
other speakers reiterated,
the economy is on the
upswing, meaning future
profits will only increase.
"Once the peace process
moves forward and there is
more stability in the
Middle East region, Israel
will have the potential to
become one of the strongest
economic blocs in the
world," Mr. Tauber said. ❑

Fire Ruins
Tel Aviv Store
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A smoky
fire started by a cooking gas
leak ruined Tel Aviv's pop-
ular London Mini-Store and
put 33 people in the hospital
for smoke inhalation.
No deaths were caused by
the early morning fire in the
commercial ground floor of a
15-story, mainly residential
building in the center of Tel
Aviv.
Only one person was de-
scribed as being in serious
condition, with another four
suffering medium damage to
lungs.
The ground floor of the
building is occupied by cor-
ridors lined by dozens of
popular shops and a wide
hall with several cafes and
restaurants.
The basement is occupied
by two theaters — the Tzafta
Theater and the Bat-Dor
Dance Company — and a
cinema.
