Hanna Bav li
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Hanna
Bavli, Israel's "high priest-
ess of etiquette and behav-
ior," who taught generations
of Israelis the correct man-
ner of dress, public behavior
and how to use a knife and
fork,
died in Tel Aviv at the
--
age of 93.
Ms. Bavli grew up in St.
Petersburg and came to
Palestine at the age of 18,
"alone, with a violin and
mink coat," as she told her
many friends.
She began work as a farm
pioneer in the Emek Valley
and also played violin at
concerts in Palestine and
Paris.
Speaking nine languages
fluently, Ms. Bavli was
recruited by the intelligence
wing of the Haganah. After
the establishment of the
State of Israel, she was sent
on fund-raising trips to
Switzerland and
Czechoslovakia to help pur-
chase arms.
She served as the lion-
lorary secretary of the Israel
Philharmonic Orchestra for
some years and went to
6
'South
Africa as the wife of
the Israeli ambassador.
Upon her return from
South Africa, at the age of
0, she began her new
career, "teaching brash
young Israelis how to
ehave properly," according
:o her son, Mickey Bavli.
Then Foreign Minister
Moshe Sharett took up Ms.
Bavli's offer of her services,
having her run an etiquette
bourse for Israeli candidates
for diplomatic posts abroad.
In recent years, up until
'about a year ago, Ms. Bavli
wrote weekly columns for
local newspapers and hosted
a talk show on Israel Radio
in which she answered
questions on etiquette posed
by radio listeners.
