MOTOR COACH TOURS - 13 YEARS EXPERIENCE!

original Gold Rush city from
the 1800s destroyed by an
1889 fire. More than the
charred building remnants,
the anecdotes provided by the
guides — frequently young ac-
tors earning a living — are
delightful.
Board the Monorail for
Seattle Center, where the re-
mains of the 1962 World's
Fair invite. Take the elevator
up the 605-foot-high Space
Needle, where the obser-
vatory at the top affords
360-degree views of Seattle
and surrounding countryside.
The Children's Museum is
great and many cultural per-
formances are held.
To really appreciate Seattle,
take one of the tours leaving
from the waterfront.
The city is based on Puget
Sound and Lake Washington,
and fleets of boats, commer-
cial and pleasure craft, dot
the harbors. Sail through the
Hiram M. Chittenden Locks
or Ballard Locks with its fish
ladder.
Another cruise provides in-
sight into the region's native
Americans. Take the boat to
Tillicum Village on Blake
Island, a state park. The
outing is touristy yet in-
teresting. Walk through the
cypress and Douglas fir forest,
where wild mink are among
the inhabitants.
The alpine wildflower tour
displays tremendous masses
of purple lupine, magenta
paintbrush, blue daisies and
the yellow anemone,
nicknamed the Tina Turner
flower. So spectacular are the
meadows with thousands of
flowers, backed by the moun-
tain peak, that spectators
often spontaneously break in-
to a Julie Andrews imitation
of "The hills are alive with
the sound of music," said
guide Mary Henterly..
