Mr. Talisman is ambiva-
lent about leaving CJF at a
time when federations
around the country are facing
government cutbacks in key
programs.
"I have very mixed feel-
ings," he said. "The most pre-
cious things are the
friendships I have developed.
Many of them are now in the
second generation: the sons
and daughters of the people I
worked with when I began
this job. It has been a won-
derful experience."
Agudah Adjusts
To New Dept.
Agudath Israel of America,
which has made federal sup-
port for private schools a top
priority, recently met with
Richard W. Riley, the new ed-
ucation secretary. The Or-
thodox group is the
government liaison for about
600 yeshivas and Jewish day
schools.
The Clinton administration
opposes a key part of Agu-
dah's educational agenda:
"School choice" programs to
let federal dollars fund stu-
dents' tuition at private and
parochial schools.
But Agudah is not letting
that issue prevent it from
working with the new educa-
tion team. Abba Cohen, Agu-
dah's Washington repre-
sentative, said, "The biggest
issue right now is reautho-
rizing the elementary and
secondary education act. This
is the primary mechanism for
providing federal funding to
schools."
Not surprisingly, Agudah
is pushing the administration
to continue supporting "edu-
cational equity," the idea that
Washington should support
quality education for all chil-
dren, whether they attend
public, private or parochial
schools.
"We're gratified by the sec-
retary's comments about ed-
ucating all of America's
children and developing a
public-private school part-
nership," said Mr. Cohen.
"That is an area where we
may be able to join hands and
work together."
