For Yom Hazikaron

Israel Ambassador to the
United Nations Gad Yaacobi
will be the main speaker at
the Jewish community's Yom
Hazikaron — Israel Remem-
brance Day — ceremony 7
p.m. May 13 at the Maple-
Drake Jewish Community
Center. The ceremony is part
of the Jewish community's
Israel Independence Day cel-
ebration marking Israel's
45th anniversary of state-
hood.
Affiliated with Israel's
Labor Party, Mr. Yaacobi has
been a Knesset member for
23 years. Prior to accepting
the ambassadorship, he
headed the ministries of eco-
nomics, transportation and
communications. He also was
a member of the inner
Cabinet, dealing with defense
and foreign affairs, and the
Ministerial Committee for
Economic Affairs.
Mr. Yaacobi chaired or was
a member of several Knesset
committees. He was a leader
of the Public Movement for
Electoral Reform and chair-
man of the bipartisan
Ministerial Committee for
Electoral Reform. He also
was responsible for the estab-
lishment of the cable televi-
sion network in Israel and for
legislation providing for the
creation of Israel's second
television channel.
The Yom Hazikaron obser-
vance memorializes nearly
18,000 Israeli soldiers who
have given their lives defend-
ing the Jewish state. The
program will include a
keynote address by the

ambassador, film clips of the
State of Israel's 45th
anniversary celebration,
songs and poems by students
and Israeli artists, an audio-
visual presentation and
indoor and outdoor cere-
monies.
Plans for a permanent
memorial will be unveiled. It
will be the only such memori-
al outside of Israel.
Chairmen of the obser-
vance are Dennis Bernard,
Betsy Snider Heuer, Adina
Laks and Yiftach Maas.
Honorary chairmen are
Doreen Hermelin and Joel
Tauber.
Other Israel Independence
Day events include:
• Jewish Experiences For
Families' mini-mega Israel
mission with crafts, music,
Israeli dancing, cooking, pet-
ting zoo, 6:30 p.m. May 12,
Jimmy Prentis Morris
Jewish Center in Oak Park.
The program will be repeated
after the Walk for Israel on
May 16.
• Gevatron, 18-member
Israeli singing and musical
troupe from Kibbutz Geva,
performance and sing-along,
9:30 p.m. May 15, Maple-
Drake Jewish Center.
• Walk for Israel, leaving
from the Maple-Drake
Jewish Center at 11:30 a.m.
Registration 10:30 a.m.
Following the walk, there
will be an indoor Israeli
street fair with crafts,
exhibits, games, entertain-
ment and food at the JCC.
Congressman Eric Finger-
hut, D-Ohio, will speak on
"U.S.-Israel Relations"; teen
mystery movie night, 5:30
p.m., AMC Americana West
Theater, sponsored by Jewish
Federation Youth Campaign.
• Jerusalem Day party for
teens, 5 p.m., May 23, United
Hebrew Schools Building,
Southfield. The evening will
feature Israeli dancing,
singing, a pizza party and
exhibits on study-in-Israel
programs. Admission is free.

Network Event
At Crosswinds

The
American-Israel
Chamber of Commerce of
Michigan will sponsor its
second networking event
5:30 - 7:00 p.m. May 5 at
the Danielle Peleg Gallery
Inc. in the Crosswinds
Mall.
The purpose of the event
is to provide Chamber
members and prospective
members an opportunity to
meet fellow businessper-
sons for networking, learn
about opportunities to con-
duct business with Israel,
hear about Chamber mem-
bers who have initiated or
expanded business with
Israel, and view a collection
of Israeli art in a contempo-
rary setting.
Danielle
Peleg,
a
Chamber and American-
Israel Education Institute
board member, was one of
the consultants to the
Institute committee which
brought the first exhibition
of contemporary Israeli art
to the Detroit Institute of
Arts in May 1991.
There is a charge for the
networking reception.

Midrasha Sets
Teachers Class

On four Wednesday nights,
beginning May 12,
Midrasha College of Jewish
Studies will offer a course
for Hebrew teachers, focus-
ing on the development of
techniques for teaching
Hebrew to pre-schoul and
kindergarten children.
The course, titled, "A
Spring Rainbow of Ideas:
Keshet Ha-Aviv," will meet
7-9 p.m. at the Agency for
Jewish Education taught
by Rita Abramson, elemen-
tary principal of Temple
Israel.
Students will create
materials to be used in the
classroom and will be able
to enhance their class-
rooms with the Hebrew
language. This is a continu-
ation of a course from last
fall, but new students are
welcome to join. There is a
charge, and pre-registra-
tion is suggested.

STS Parlor Meeting
Hears Student Speak

Faudem-Ershler

A major gifts meeting on
behalf of the Jewish
Theological Seminary of
America will be held May
12 at the home of Paula and
Louis Glazier. The guests of
honor will be this year's
Seminary Second Century
Award recipients. Michele
Faudem Ershler will be the
speaker.
Ms. Faudem Ershler is a
second year rabbinical stu-
dent. She is the recipient of
the Pauline and Herman
Canner Rabbinical Scholar-
ship at the Jewish
Theological Seminary. She
grew up in West Bloomfield,
where she attended Hillel
Day School, before her fami-
ly made aliyah in 1983. In
Israel, she attended the
Pelech Experimental
Religious High School for
Girls. Ms. Faudem Ershler
kept and enhanced her ties
with the Detroit Jewish
community through spend-
ing six summers on the
staff of Tamarack Camp.
After serving two years in
the Israeli army working
with the elderly, Ms.
Faudem Ershler completed
her undergraduate educa-
tion at the Seminary's joint
program with Columbia
University. She received a
B.A. in American history
from Columbia, and a B.A.
in Talmud from the
Seminary's graduate school.
This year's Second
Century award honorees
are William and Susan
Graham of Adat Shalom
Synagogue; Renee and

Richard Gunsberg of
Congregation B'nai Moshe;
Joel and Loraine Shapiro of
Congregation Beth Abra-
ham Hillel Moses; Max M.
Shaye of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek and Howard
and Susan Tapper of
Congregation Beth Shalom.
They will be honored at
the annual community-wide
dinner, given on behalf of
the Seminary, June 1 at
Congregation Shaarey
Zedek. Funds raised
through the Detroit Friends
of the Seminary go for rab-
binical and cantorial schol-
arships and to maintain the
Seminary's world-wide edu-
cational programming.
