his crowning glory thus far.
Designed by architect
Avraham Yaski, it features
high- domed, mirrored
skylights and a glass wall
overlooking the Judean
Hills and a large ravine.
"I related to this structure
as to a temple," said Mr.
Azrieli. "And I think we suc-
ceeded in building one of the
most beautiful and elegant
buildings in Jerusalem and
even in all of Israel.
"The building architec-
turally expresses Jerusalem,
not just in its exterior of
Jerusalem stone, but also in
its interior design.
"With the exception of the
domes, almost all the mate-
rials used in building are
from Israel. This mall is
much more beautiful than
any I know of in Canada or
the U.S., including the ones I
built there."
So convinced were
Jerusalem retailers of the
viability of the project that
some 96 percent of the space
was rented well before open-
ing day.
Following the dedication
and ribbon-cutting ceremony
last month, led by Mr.
Azrieli and Jerusalem
Mayor Teddy Kollek, Mr.
Azrieli's daughter Sharon,
an award-winning soprano,
gave a concert accom- panied
by the Jerusalem Symphony
Orchestra and Canadian
conductor Boris Brott.
Later, guests were treated
to a lengthy fireworks
display outdoors, with
pyrotechnics imported from
the Far East for the occa-
sion.
Israeli Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres pointed out
that Mr. Azrieli had guar-
anteed when construction
began two years earlier that
the mall would open precise-
ly on March 16, 1993.
And Canadian Ambas-
sador Norman Spector jok-
ingly chided Mr. Azrieli for
spending too much time in
Israel. Calling the mall
"more modern than any we
have," Mr. Spector said he
hoped Mr. Azrieli would use
his talents to create more of
the same in Canada.
On a more serious note,
the ambassador called on
Canadian entrepreneurs to
contribute to Israel's econ-
omic development.
The Canion Yerushalayim
is only one component of a
major complex due to be
completed within the next
couple of years.
In addition to the soccer
stadium, there are the re-
mains of a 5,000-year-old
Canaanite village uncovered
during excavation of the
area in 1991.
