eousness" and, especially,
U.S. and foreign politicians'
proclivity to "lecture"
Germans about morality.
Yet, he notes, "the West
has decided to let the
Bosnians burn, while
Germany takes in almost all
the refugees" and, in recent
months, about two million
Germans have protested
racist in their country.
Meanwhile, "Britain is
shot through with anti-for-
eigner prejudice and vio-
lence. Belgium has just
effectively partitioned
itself... between fratricidal
tribes... Even in the United
States, a majority of those
who voted in 1988 cast their
ballots... for a discredited
jerk [George Bush] who
used race prejudice as his
last-ditch salesmanship [a
reference to the ex-presi-
dent's Willie Horton cam-
paign ads].... Millions more
voted [in 1992] for a doltish
Texas tycoon [Ross Perot]
who... said that no Jew
would ever marry his
daughter."
And a letter in the
Washington Post from Mary
Germain of Plainsboro, N.J.,
asked, "What did we learn
from the Holocaust? Do we
care?"
Of the slaughters in
Bosnia, she wrote, "all
major and political and
social forces are impotent
and cannot stop the 'ethnic
cleansing'... And voices that
should exercise their moral
suasion over the combatants
from their faith — the pope
and the patriarch of
Belgrade — are conspicu-
ously silent. Silence and
appeasement fuel the
oppressor — Nazi or Serb."

`Toy Goys'-R-Us

Ah, the New Republic, where
sly wit sits cheek-by-jowl with
the latest punditry about Bill
and Hillary.
Now comes senior editor
Michael Lewis with a new
word fabrication: "Toy goy,"
an obvious takeoff on "toy
boy." _
Mr. Lewis defines "toy
goy" as a "flaming gentile
[working] in a Jewish insti-
tution. The toy goy has
many privileges: he is per-
mitted to slough off before
and after (but never during)
Jewish holidays.
Mr. Lewis seems to take
pleasure in his current sta-
tus. Maybe it elevates him
to being a minority among
one of the most ancient of
minorities. One wonders if
he would be "a flaming gen-
tile" if he worked in a gen-
tile institution. ❑
