. .
believe even at Ciao's recent
pre-opening that a successful
endeavor was about to hap-
pen with its opening two days
later . . . Somehow there's a
sort of good feeling about the
new Ciao! at former site of El
rIbnito on Evergreen, north of
10 1/2 Mile (Civic Center
Drive).
Its clean lines, no more
stucco walls to get clothing
snags, colorful neon tubing
around the large bar and one
of the most important of them
all, good waitpersons like
Lora Chanitsky to serve the
well-rounded and diversified
menu . . . I sat at the end of
a table with Nimrod and
Varda Rosenthal, Bob and
Mary Block, Peter Christian
and Dr. Marana Geha . . . It
would have been a normal
tendency for Lora to serve my
decaf from the end but she
properly came to the rear and
poured from the right where
the cup is correctly located
. . . This you won't find too
often.
Must be a ruboff of the
restaurant expertise of Dieter
Boehm, Dennis Serras and
Mike Gibbons, owners of
Gratzis in Ann Arbor, D. Den-
nisons of Farmington Hills
and Livonia plus numerous
more . . . These three gents
rank among the best as
restaurateurs.
TOP HONOR by Radisson
Hotels International, "The
President's Award," was given
to Radisson Plaza at Town
Center off Northwestern
Highway and Evergreen .. .
It was chosen from among
more than 300 Radisson
Plaza hotels, suite hotels,
inns and resorts nationwide
. . . Tom Padgett is general
manager of Radisson Plaza at
Town Center which recently
also received a 1993 Four Dia-
mond honor by AAA
Michigan . . . Only 4% of the
29,000 hotels and restaurants
across the country inspected
by AAA are given this award.
FOOD AT SIXTH annual
International Folk Dance
Festival, this Sunday, 3:30 to
7 p.m. • at the Southfield
Pavilion on Evergreen, will be
by Baker's Loaf, French;
Gateway Deli, Jewish; Don
Ricardo's, Spanish; Peacock,
Indian; Savino Sorbett,
Italian; plus Middle Eastern,
Polish and Japanese.
WITH THE addition of
next door's former Sy Draft
space recently-opened La
Fendi Middle-Eastern and
American restaurant seats
190 in a well-spaced at-
mosphere . . . This is the
former location of Sol's Deli
on Evergreen and 11 Mile .. .
A completely new look is such
that you'd never know it was
the same place . . . Brothers
Tony and Raad Tomana did a
full gut job with amazing
results.
Food items not seen at other
Mid-Eastern restaurants in
this locale are on the menu
. . . Also a lot of vegetarian
specialties and a full-scale
juice bar with fresh-squeezed
fruits and vegetables.
CONGRATS . . . to Elsie
and Art Goldman . . . on their
50th anniversary . . . Art had
taken a two-day leave from
the army to get married but
he and Elsie Stern couldn't
get a place . . . The knot was
finally tied at Workmen's
Circle on Linwood and he
returned to Alaska.
THIS YEAR'S 11th an-
nual dinner by Michigan
Cancer Foundation is ex-
pected to be the biggest and
best of them all . . . and that's
saying a lot.
Super star Paul Anka ("My
Way," etc.) will headline the
huge MCF Golden Anniver-
sary gala May 22 a the
Westin Hotel . . . Judy and
Randy Agley are chairing
this year's 50-year milestone
event.
OPENING OF the new Da
Vinci's Market at Novi Hilton
Hotel, 1-75 and Haggerty, is
set for the end of April . . . It
will be a class Italian dining
spot located in the former Or-
chard Cafe locale with choice
menu variations prepared by
Executive Chef Dean George
and his staff.
Recent tasting for a small
group was a table in the
hotel's large kitchen.
Novi Hilton guest wrote to
commend the hotel on its
security .. . What she saw
was General Manager Alan
Crisantiello and his and wife
Michele's two rottweilers,
Bruiser and Daisy, walking
down the hall . . . Good thing
the guest didn't see Food and
Beverage Director Mark
Blakely . . . He's hobbling
around these days after
twisting his ankle playing
yard basketball.
THEY'RE CALLED "The
Roland Smiles" . . . It's on the
faces of all the gracious peo-
ple who work at Roland Op-
tics in Applegate Square on
Northwestern Hwy. . . . You
don't need glasses to see their
beautiful smiles . They
should rent themselves out to
a lot of waitpersons around
town who sure could use some
lessons in smiling. ❑
