sunny day in St.
Thomas, and the down-
town shopping area of
Charlotte Amalie bustles
with activity. Passengers
from cruise ships, tourists
staying on the island, day-
trippers from San Juan and
locals gaze into shop windows
and wander along the quaint
narrow alleyways.
They're not here only to
soak up local color. With
stores that sell goods from all
over the world at duty-free,
discounted prices, St. Thomas
is the undisputed shopping
capital of the Caribbean.
For Jewish tourists, there's
an extra bargain: the chance
to visit Jewish-owned stores
that sell quality wares - and
also to meet Jewish shop
owners who are longtime
residents of the island.
In the informal atmosphere
of this U.S. Virgin Island,
they are often on hand and
readily accessible to visitors,
as I discovered on a recent
visit to St. Thomas.
Like many visitors, I had
come on a day-trip from San
Juan, using the convenient
American Eagle commuter
flights that fly hourly to St.
Thomas. The flight took just
23 ,minutes, and soon I was
standing in front of Cosmo-
politan, a store near the
waterfront.
The sign in the window
read "Gottex of Israel." In-
side, an entire front section
displayed the latest in the
stylish, colorful swimwear
imported from Israel - racks
of swimsuits, accessories and
cover-ups to wear over
swimsuits.

A former New Yorker, Mr.
Tenenbaum now presides over
a family business his grand-
father launched when he
opened a clothing store in
Curacao in the mid-1930s. In
time, his parents were part-
ners in the business and in
1973 they opened the St.
Thomas store. Mr. Tenen-
baum came from Queens to
help them open and never
went back to New York.
The store carries high
quality name-brand merchan-
dise from abroad sold at a 20
to 30 percent discount from
prices in the United States,
and it includes what is pro-

began when Mr. Tenenbaum's
late grandmother, Miriam
Groisman, began dealing
directly with the Israeli
manufacturer. "And we've

since," said Mr. Tenenbaum,
who carries 30 to 35 groups
every season.
Mr. Tenenbaum and his
wife, Cindy, his partner and
buyer, have met customers
from all over the world,
especially because St.
Thomas is the top cruise ship
