ships, there are repeat
customers who vacation on
the island, and sometimes
there are well-known visitors,
too.
Israeli artist Yaakov Agam
has bought shoes several
times. "During one visit,
while he was making a phone
call to Paris, he quickly did
my portrait and signed it,"
said Mr. Tenenbaum, who
now has the work displayed in
his home.
He, his wife and 9-year-old
daughter, Jan, 9, live in a
home which overlooks Me-
gan's Bay. They're members
of St. Thomas' Reform con-
gregation and loyal islanders.
"We really enjoy living here,"
said Mr. Tenebaum. "We love
the island. I only wish I had
more time to enjoy it!"
Only a few minutes' walk
from Cosmopolitan, and right
in the middle of Main Street,
is another long-established
shop. Tropicana, which bills
itself as the world's largest
perfumerie, is a spacious
world of fragrance, with
counters and counters of
name-brand perfumes.
Cacharel, Hermes, Pierre
Cardin, Chanel, Jean Patou,
Christian Dior, Givenchy,
Fendi, Guerlain — all these
and more are available, in
elegant bottles of all sizes and
shapes.
There are island fragrances,
too, with names like Hibiscus,
White Ginger, St. John's Bay
Rum and Island Man. And
skin care products and
cosmetics, too.
Tropicana has been selling
perfumes since Lola and Isaac
Machover first opened a store
on Main Street in the early
1950s. As business grew and
they prospered, they opened
an even larger store, the pre-
sent site. Their daughter,
Estelle Roth, is now owner
and president of Tropicana.
She has written a brief
outline of the history of
Tropicana in a booklet
available to customers. It also
has a handy chart summing
up some of the duty-free sav-
ings: a one-ounce bottle of
Hermes Caleche perfume, for
example, which sells for a
hefty $220 in the U.S., is $135
duty free — a savings of $85.
Even for lesser priced items,
the savings are sizeable. No
wonder people hop aboard the
American Eagle plane from
San Juan and return the
same day with armloads full
of purchases.
But it's not only the bar-
gains that make St. Thomas
shopping enjoyable. There's
also the chance to meet per-
sonable store owners like
George Jesner, whose jewelry
