STEVE HARTZ writes .. .
"The biggest breakfast secret
in town could be Pickle Bar-
) rel Deli in Evergren Plaza. I
say this has to be a secret
because I recently ventured
out to 12 Mile and Evergreen
one Sunday morning, walked
into Pickle Barrel at 10:30
a.m., and there was no
> waiting. Greeted with a smile
by owner Al Winkler, I was
served a breakfast with por-
tions fit for a king. The
friendly staff even offered to
bring me a barrel of pickles
with my omelette; that's a
> first!
"I've eaten breakfast at
many delis on Sundays before.
Whenever I walk in at 10
a.m., I wait and wait and wait
and the service is usually
only adequate; the food many
times just fair. I used to think
>
I there was a reason why
restaurants drew long lines;
that it was because of their
excellent food and service.
However, I now have learned
that is not necessarily the
case.
"At Al Winkler's Pickle
Barrel, which opens at 10
a.m. on Sundays, I was
treated like royalty, served a
great hot omelette, a fresh
salt bagel and well done hash
browns. The service I receiv-
ed was superior. When this
breakfast secret gets out,
Pickle Barrel regulars on
Sunday mornings like at-
torney Steven Ribiat and his
mom, Sarah, may never
speak to me again. I don't
think they would want to wait
an hour to get served."

THIS SUNDAY is 38th an-
niversary of Hoa Kow on Nine
Mile Rd., west of Coolidge in
Oak Park, originally opened
by Dan Woo, born and raised
in Canton, China . . . His son,
Gene, came to America when
11 years old, unable to speak
English but learning quickly
as he did the restaurant
business . . . Since 1975, Gene
has been Hoa Kow's sole
proprietor.
May 6 is another anniver-
sary celebration . . . It will be
the first year of Gene's Hoa
Kow at Crosswind's Mall, Or-
chard Lake Road and Lone
Pine, where his two chefs, Jin
Qui Ju from China and Kin
Ho Yue from Hong Kong,
were both brought here by
Gene together with their
families and wide array of
Chinese dishes.
Gene and wife Ruby are
responsible for many of How
Kow's unique broiled
whitefish recipes . . . For this
reason, between the two
places over 1,000 pounds of
whitefish a week are served
. . . an amount unheard of
outside seafood operations.
ONE OF THE MOST im-
portant things in the
restaurant business today is
something a lot of restau-
rateurs seem to have forgot-
ten . . . or never knew . . . the
bold significance of personal
service that puts the custo-
mer's needs ahead of the
establishment's. ❑
