ple, though.
In a section of the Torah
discussing a great tragedy
when God is not with the
Jews, the word Shoah,
Hebrew for Holocaust, is
spelled out with every 49th
letter. The words Eich-
mann, Hitler and Ausch-
witz are found in code in
the same passage.
Rabbi Mechanic cited
other examples of coding in
the Torah, from names of
great rabbis to Anwar
Sadat's murder. He said
the acronym AIDS is also
coded in the Torah in the
section about Sodom and
Gomorrah.
When asked by partici-
pants over lunch if the
words Acquired Immune
Deficiency Syndrome or
intravenous drug user had
been coded into the Torah,
Rabbi Mechanic did not
know.
Once upon a time,
Hebrew scholars would
attempt to break these
codes. Today, the words are
entered into a computer
which figures out these
sophisticated riddles.
Rabbi Mechanic said the
work is so costly that
words entered must be cho-
sen carefully, not random-
ly.
"We can't look to the
future. We don't know
`what words to look for or
'how to interpret them,"
Rabbi Mechanic said.
"I think the crux of the
program is that all this
information is here. And it
came from somewhere spe-
-,cial," Rabbi Mechanic said. ❑

Even if all of us were wise,
all of us people of understanding,
all of us learned in Torah, it would
still be our obligation to tell the
story of the Exodus from Egypt.
-- The Haggadah
0
Passover
As we retell the story of the Exodus,
the epic journey of our people
continues. For at no time in our history
has there been a more dramatic movement
of Jewish refugees out of oppression
and into freedom.
With your generous support of the Allied
Jewish Campaign, you are helping write
this modern Haggadah.
