drivers and three volun-
teers. To accommodate the
transportation needs of
more individuals — includ-
ing new Americans who
haven't learned how to
drive or are too old to
learn — tips must be
scheduled two weeks in
advance.
Jewish Family Service
and Resettlement Service
work with approximately
150 volunteers. Though
this does not reflect a
decline in volunteerism,
the number of volunteers
has not kept up with the
increased need for services
over the years. An aging
population, the recession,
and new refugees add to
the demand for help.
JFS and Resettlement
hope younger people —
college students, for exam-
ple — might become more
involved.
All volunteers are inter-
viewed. After filling out
identification forms and
submitting references, vol-
unteers are matched with
those in need. To volun-
teer, call Elina Zilberberg
at Jewish Family Service,
559-1500.

needed.

Zilberberg said.
Eight senior citizens are
on a waiting list for the
Friendly Visitor program,
which matches elderly peo-
ple with volunteers. They
meet for one or two hours
each week. The volunteer
might help the elderly per-
son with daily chores. Or
the two individuals might
simply schmooze.
"That volunteer might
be the older person's only
link to the outside world,"
Mrs. Zilberberg said. "It's
mind-boggling."
Homebound individuals
who rely on the Shopper
program await more vol-
unteers who will go to the
grocery store or run other
errands for them.
Volunteer drivers also
are needed, Mrs. Zilber-
berg said. The agency
