DIVORCE
SETTLEMENT
CE TER
Egyptian experience to teach
that other oppressed groups
will be similarly delivered
and their oppressors will be
punished. So if the motiva-
ion to love the stranger is not
rooted in compassion, or
because it is simply the
righteous thing to do, then at
least love the stranger
because in the end God will
look out for the stranger and
he oppressor will get his due.
Others see the Torah trying
to protect the weak. This com-
.mandment is about self-
control: when we are tempted
to use power against the
defenseless, it acts as a bar-
rier to the evil impulses of ex-
ploitation. All people are
human beings; all are entitl-
ed to dignity. Our religion is
not just a set of rituals and
_beliefs; it is a program of in-
teraction with other people.
Rabbi Leo Baeck taught that
the treatment of strangers is
a test of Jewish morality. It is
a measure of our humanity.
Ultimately, we are all strang-
ers who must take care of
each other.
