to bring about the construc-
tion of a new car," said Mr.
Rosenthal. "Outfitting a fac-
tory for a new car is a three-
to five-year cycle, and it's a
very important part of our
business."
We'll see growth in the re-
tooling of plants. There are
programs out there where
well be participating. Amer-
ica, he said, has overbuilt it-
self with auto assembly
plants. Now, with more
Americans holding onto theirr
cars longer, demand is less,
and less plants are outfitting
for the future.
With this, Mr. Rosenthal
added, is a pricing and a prof-
it squeeze. Money, he said, is
much harder to collect from
some of his customers. And
then there are the automo-
tive layoffs.
"These layoffs are differ-
ent," he said. "They're differ-
ent because the automotive
employees are not able to find
positions that offer any sort
of career continuity. People
looking for well-paying new
jobs are finding that they
have to accept lower paying
positions if they want to
work. I don't see a lot of these
jobs coming back.
Because Madison supplies
parts for the maintenance of
the plants, it is directly af-
fected by cutbacks in the auto
industry.
To battle the cutbacks,
Madison has implemented a
company-wide evaluation
and improvement system
called "Continuous Process
Improvement" or CPI. It's an
effort for the employees to un-
derstand as a team that to
compete, they need to be the
best out there.
"Something like this was
never talked about in the in-
dustry years ago," Mr. Rosen-
thal said. "But our
employees, including the
management, are being
trained to understand what
the customers' needs are.
"Five years ago, we under-
estimated what the 1990s
would mean in this industry,"
he continued. "Changes had
to be made and the future
had to be looked at. We didn't
understand what being a ser-
vice business really meant.
But now we see the industry
is in a fragile recovery, and
as a business we have to
make sure that we're work-
ing as efficiently as possible
to service our customers." ❑
