breads and cereals, and foods rich in Vitamin
C. They are believed to have a calming effect
on the body. Special amino acids in milk, poul-
try and fish may do the same.
Ms. Brown also recommends two stress
reducing exercises. The first is a breathing
exercise she says will lessen anxiety in one
to two minutes. 'The goal is to become aware
of your breathing," she says, "by inhaling
through your nose to a count of three and ex-
haling through your mouth to a count of
three." You should do this for about a minute.
'When you are stressed, you tend to breath
shallow, which contributes to feeling anxious
because oxygen and carbon dioxide are not
in balance," she adds. "When you do these
breathing exercises, you balance your blood
gases and begin to feel calm and relaxed." A
second quick fix is tensing your shoulder mus-
cles to a count of five and then releasing them.
This is a great trick to use right before start-
ing up the aisle on your wedding day.
"I think one of the best ways to handle
stress is to give yourself a positive self-talk,"
continues Ms. Brown, "because you tend to
feel what you are saying, and your body re-
acts in a positive way." She suggests a simple
line such as "I can handle this" and even rec-
ommends writing it down on a note card and
keeping it nearby at work or home.
Relaxation therapy tapes can help, but ones
with good self-instruction are hard to find.
Getting a massage is a wonderful way to re-
lax for an hour or so in a busy wedding sched-
ule and helps to chase stress away for awhile.
Done properly, it can help relieve neck and
shoulder tension, eye strain, headaches, back
pain, even sleeplessness.
Several beauty salons and spas offer this
service, or you can arrange for it in your home.
Mira Linder Spa in the City in Southfield of-
fers a full-day program of relaxation therapy.
They even provide special packages for the
bride.
