Wonderful

"A wonderful story featuring

n affair catered in its
entirety by a fruit
market? . . . Why not?
. . . Everybody and his
or her sister or brother seems
to be trying to get into the
lucrative act . . . Of course
there have been shindigs
where I might've thought it
had the catering touches of a
fruit market . . . like the bride
and groom at a wedding one
time who were both
vegetarians and thought all
their guests were, too.
But here is a bona fide one
with catering playing a big
portion of its take . . . Im-
agine a fruit market with a
conference room for party
planning and another sector
for floral consultation on the
affair.
Doesn't sound like a fruit
market concept, but it's the
dream come true of Vic Ven-
timiglia, owner of Vic's Fruit
Market on Southfield just
north of 13 Mile Road where
two general managers, Kim
Sawaya and Dean Balsamo,
take over different shifts .. .
He calls it Gourmet Unique,
with catering for intimate
dinner parties to lavish wed-
ding and bar mitzvah recep-
tions to corporate affairs and
banquets.
Experience-wise, it's noth-
ing new to the catering staff
of Vic's, whose professionals
take over all party necessities
like waitstaff, equipment ren-
tal and set-up coordination,
clean-up management, etc.
The food is prepared by Ex-
ecutive Chef Dash Neiding,
formerly of R.I.K.'s Total
Cuisine . . . His sous chef,
Paul Kim, worked with Dash
at R.I.K.'s . . . A pastry chef
too, John Drozd, is also from
R.I.K.'s Total Cuisine, with
cakes and pastries on display
for an eyeful of visible
consumption.
All the flowers needed by
floral designer Diane
Signorelli are at Vic's . . . She
has been with Vic six years
and helps folks plan parties,
theme or otherwise, in a con-
ference room set aside just for
this.
The
decorations
on
Gourmet Unique's excellent
display of all-occasion cakes
are the work of Annette Wells
from Gourmet Bakery in
Shelby . . . A standout is the
nine-tiered wedding beauty
. . . John Taormina manages
the meat department with

Joe Lupovich, his personable
counter man . . . Vic is the
first person Joe has ever
worked for . . . He had his own
butcher shop 20 years on 14th
and Ferry . . . John
Buschemi, head of the seafood
and fish department, used to
own Pomeroy's on Southfield
and 12 Mile, bossing eight
stores at one time.
Hard to conceive a fruit
market that makes its own
bread and rolls, scones, muf-
fins, cakes, tortes, truffles,
donuts, etc. . . . but it's all
there for carry-out at Vic's
Gourmet Bakery.
There's nothing quite like
this anywhere in a fruit
market . . . a vision that Vic
has had for some time . . . and
only able to put it together
after moving from his
previous 7,100-square-foot
site at Country Corners
across the street to its present
23,000-square-foot locale that
formerly housed a sporting
goods store.
Give a lot of credit to Vic
Ventimiglia . . . Instead of
staying pat on a good thing,
Vic's Fruit Market, he pur-
sued his vision with fervor .. .
and the ultimate result is a
fine Gourmet Unique cater-
ing operation.

dancing mood, but its more
formal look is only a facade
. . . The reasonably priced
menu of Sebastian's Grill still
prevails as Martin Scot
A
Kosins and his Trio (Al Mar-
tin, bass; Jay Wesch, drums)
plays a cafe society-style
piano with a classic pop reper-
toire that includes Gershwin,
Cole Porter and current
classic from Broadway hits.
Martin returns to the
musical scene after a sab-
batical from his music career
during which he wrote the
fine Maya's First Rose, a lov-
ing tribute to his dog . . . It
was published by Open Sky —4
Books and is available at area
bookstores.

be successful . . . But this
time, at the request of a lot of
customers, Matt Prentice has
given in for at least one even-
ing of the week . . . Saturdays
. . . and when you get right
down to it, it's something he
also has wanted.
Sebastian's Grill, in Troy's
Somerset Collection on W
Big Beaver, had previously
been the more formally ap-
pointed Sebastian's before
Matt and his Unique
Restaurant Corp. changed to
the present format of
informality.
Guests asked for a return of
the dinner and dance concept
on Saturday nights, asking
why Sebastian's Grill didn't
bring back the very popular
Martin Scot Kosins Trio.
As of last Saturday, their
wish is a reality . . . Sebas-
tian's Grill tables are dressed
