problem is that for the lib-
eral world, we're too Jewish.
"And for the Jewish world,
we're too liberal. That puts
us in a very difficult posi-
tion. People are often in-
trigued, but they don't give
money," he says.
Not only does Mr. Lerner,
49, expect to be around more
Tikkun givers in New York,
but he expects to be around
more readers there, where
1.45 million Jews live, vs.
roughly 220,000 in the Bay
Area.
"There seems to be a
higher percentage of people
who read the magazine
there," says mr. Lerner.
"In the Bay Area, it is
sometimes hard to get people
to talk about the ideas in the
magai-nc. Talking about
ideas has much greater cur-
rency there."
In the Bay Area, Tikkun
occupies offices in an Oak-
land home owned by Mr.
Lerner. The new office in
New York is housed in a
Conservative synagogue,
Ansche Chesed, located on
Manhattan's Upper West
:ide.
Mr. Lerner, whose endless
6,1f-promotion has alienated
Dme, but is in many ways
,sponsible for the journal
keeping afloat, says
Tikkun's stock has risen be-
rause of Mr. Clinton's elec-
tion.
Both the president-elect
and Tipper Gore, wife of the
_vice president-elect, have
quoted from Tikkun, he
boasts.
"Our impact on the polit-
ical world has escalated,"
Mr. Lerner says.
"Unlike the past 12 years,
when the only Jewish voice
heard in the White House
was the Jewish conservative
voice, in the coming Clinton
administration our voice
will be heard. We're prob-
ably the only serious liberal
magazine that these people
read."
