New York In Winter
Lifts The Spirit

ROSE KLEINER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

I

n these challenging
times, a winter visit to
New York can do much to
lift one's spirits. The city
is pulsing with life and with
a profusion of theatre, music,
art and other diversions. As
the largest Jewish communi-
ty on the continent, New York
has such additional attrac-
tions as kosher comedy clubs,
a kosher yacht cruise, and
plenty of exhibits and plays of
Jewish interest. For singles,
the city is a great place for
mixing and meeting new
people.
If you bring your children to
New York for the winter
break, the visit can be both
educational and fun for the
youngsters and their parents.
For theater on Broadway,

There. We've even ripped it out for you.

DESTRUCTION DESIGNED FOR THE BIG

is one of the best plays this
season. A powerful work, on
the subject of Jewish life in
America, it stars the Tony
Award winner Judd Hirsch.
The Sheik of Avenue B, at
the Town Hall Theatre, is a
musical review which draws
material from Irving Berlin,
Fanny Brice, Eddie Cantor
and others.
Live, simultaneous transla-
tion into English is making
Yiddish theatre accessible to
a whole new generation at
the Folksbiene Theater. This
year's production, At The
Crossroads, is a play with
music, portraying Jewish
family life in New York's
1940s.
A one-woman musical, Bub-
bie Meises (Bubbe Stories), is
running at the Cherry Lane
Theatre. Written by and star-
ring Ellen Gould, it concerns
a woman at a personal
crossroads, who recalls her
immigrant grandmothers in
an effort to understand her
own life.
For children, a marionette
show, Hansel and Gretel, runs
at the Swiss Cottage, in Cen-
tral Park, throughout the
winter. The Museum of Mod-
ern Art has scheduled a
Family Film Festival through
March 6. A performance for
children, The Paper Bag
Players, takes place at Sym-
phony Space until March 7.
Something new in the Big
Apple is a stand-up comedy
act by an Orthodox Jewish
comedian, Robby Berman, at
Manhattan's Jerusalem 2
restaurant. "Robby's World,"
as the event is billed, is on

Thursdays at 8 p.m. through
Feb. 25.
There also is the Kosher
Komedy Showcase at Mirage,
where Middle Eastern glatt
kosher continental cuisine is
served. Entertainment is by
New York comedians. Shows
are every Saturday and Sun-
day evening.
Among the many museum
exhibits this winter, the
Yeshiva University Museum
has a display of works made
of exotic woods and inlaid
with ivory, shell, gold and
silver, all the work of
Yehudah Jacobs. Another ex-
hibit at this museum,
"Dreams of the Bible; has
paintings, by Uri Shaked, on
the subject of tales from the
Bible, and celebrating Jewish
life.

ment Museum is the first

Register of Historic Places.
Located at 97 Orchard St., the
building was home to about
10,000 immigrants between
1863 and 1935, and now is
open to the public.
An exhibit celebrating the
150th anniversary of the New
York Philharmonic is now
running at the Museum of
Television and Radio. It
features 100 hours of great
performances, with Leonard
Bernstein, Aaron Copland, It-
zhak Perlman, Vladimir
Horowitz, etc.
Accommodation in the city
is available to suit every
pocketbook. But most of the
luxury hotels have special
weekend and other package
deals that can be hard to
resist. A fitness club, a
business center and executive
tower are only a few of the
facilities at the exciting New
York Hilton. Just recently,
this hotel hosted the largest
Jewish gathering in the U.S.
— the annual meeting of the
Council of Jewish Federa-
tions. Other locations were
used as well for this gather-
ing, but much of the action
was centered at the Hilton,
which was even the site (for
five days) of New York's
