A powerful work, on the subject of Jewish life in America, it stars the Tony Award winner Judd Hirsch. The Sheik of Avenue B, at the Town Hall Theatre, is a musical review which draws material from Irving Berlin, Fanny Brice, Eddie Cantor and others. Live, simultaneous transla- tion into English is making Yiddish theatre accessible to a whole new generation at the Folksbiene Theater. This year's production, At The Crossroads, is a play with music, portraying Jewish family life in New York's 1940s. A one-woman musical, Bub- bie Meises (Bubbe Stories), is running at the Cherry Lane Theatre. Written by and star- ring Ellen Gould, it concerns a woman at a personal crossroads, who recalls her immigrant grandmothers in an effort to understand her own life. For children, a marionette show, Hansel and Gretel, runs at the Swiss Cottage, in Cen- tral Park, throughout the winter. The Museum of Mod- ern Art has scheduled a Family Film Festival through March 6. A performance for children, The Paper Bag Players, takes place at Sym- phony Space until March 7. Something new in the Big Apple is a stand-up comedy act by an Orthodox Jewish comedian, Robby Berman, at Manhattan's Jerusalem 2 restaurant. "Robby's World," as the event is billed, is on Thursdays at 8 p.m. through Feb. 25. There also is the Kosher Komedy Showcase at Mirage, where Middle Eastern glatt kosher continental cuisine is served. Entertainment is by New York comedians. Shows are every Saturday and Sun- day evening. Among the many museum exhibits this winter, the Yeshiva University Museum has a display of works made of exotic woods and inlaid with ivory, shell, gold and silver, all the work of Yehudah Jacobs. Another ex- hibit at this museum, "Dreams of the Bible; has paintings, by Uri Shaked, on the subject of tales from the Bible, and celebrating Jewish life. The Lower East Side Tene- ment Museum is the first tenement building in the U.S. to be placed on the National A visit to New York can lift your spirits. Register of Historic Places. An exhibit celebrating the 150th anniversary of the New York Philharmonic is now running at the Museum of Television and Radio. It features 100 hours of great performances, with Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, It- zhak Perlman, Vladimir Horowitz, etc. Accommodation in the city is available to suit every pocketbook. But most of the luxury hotels have special weekend and other package deals that can be hard to resist. A fitness club, a business center and executive tower are only a few of the facilities at the exciting New York Hilton. Just recently, this hotel hosted the largest Jewish gathering in the U.S. — the annual meeting of the Council of Jewish Federa- tions.
