A wonderful camping experi-
ence is offered by Hadassah
for young people at Camp
Young Judaea and Tel
Yehuda. Several of our com-
munity's children took advan-
tage of these programs during
the summer of 1992. They
share their "Favorite Things

MICHAEL KATZMAN... I like
the sports - especially soccer
and basketball and I really like
the cheers.

CAMP OF THE ARTS

JUDY ENDELMAN... My kids
were arguing over whose camp
was more Jewish-Tamarack or
CYJ. It was no contest. CYJ
won hands down. Now they
both go there.

probably be my friends for life.

ART FRIEDMAN... Our kids
loved C.Y.J. They made a lot of
friends they've kept over the
years. It has provided a strong
Jewish background for them. I
highly recommend it.

an edge, Mr. Ditter con-
tends. "They've really
been field-tested. They
know they have been
able to get along with
children outside the fam-
ily. They've taken a real
step toward growing up."
According to Dr. Leon
Rosenberg of Johns
Hopkins University,
camp is often the place
where children experi-
ence situations for the
first time.
"Camp may be the
first place a child learns
to swim. It broadens his
horizons," Dr. Rosenberg
says. "The child gets
exposure to things he
doesn't normally have a
chance to get a crack at.
Shooting a bow and
arrow or doing leather
work in arts and crafts
are good things to be
exposed to. He may
decide he never wants to
touch another leather
Il
craft, but at least he got
a crack at it."
Bruce Muchnick puts
it another way. Camp, he
says, "stimulates the
flow of creative juices in
a setting that allows kids
I
• to get in touch with a
sense of life that is larg-
er than themselves."
Camp provides multi-
ple opportunities: to
enjoy the outdoors, to
gain a greater apprecia-
tion and respect for the
environment, to find sat-
isfaction through com-
panionship with other
children and adults, and
to learn skills that
- enhance a child's self-
reliance and indepen-
dence.
Nothing spans the
breadth of the nation
like summer camps, says
the American Camping
Association's Ruth
Lister. They range from
100 percent scholarship
to the very exclusive and
expensive stays. There
are single-sex and co-ed,
traditional and specialty
camps.
Single sex and co-ed
camps have their own
pluses and minuses, say
the experts.
"At all-male or all-
female camps there
tends not to be the dis-
traction for certain aged
