HILLEL DAY SCHOOL
Welcomes
Parents of Prospective
Yeshivah in Jerusalem
for the year. She wants
to be a lawyer. The two
younger girls talk about
becoming doctors some
day.
Their mother recog-
nizes the challenges
before them. "Orthodox
young women have to be
a little bit more motivat-
ed because they're going
somewhat against the
grain of the Orthodox
structure," she says.
As Dr. Snider and Mrs.
Rider demonstrate, how-
ever, it is becoming more
acceptable and more
common for young
women to pursue any
number of careers.
Rabbi Shimansky of
Akiva considers this a
positive trend. He does
not believe that working
\_ outside the home inhibits
a woman's ability to care
for her family. "Society
offers constant threats to
traditional family life."
he says, noting that
whether or not a woman
works outside her home,
her family still faces the
challenges of secular
society.
Dr. Snider is all too
j
aware of those chal-
lenges, and she remains
concerned about her
daughters. "I will
encourage them to do
what they really want to
do, but I will be advising
them," she says.
She looks over at her
husband, who has just
put 2 1/2-year-old Rivka
to bed. "Would you let
your daughter go to med-
/
ical school?" she asks
him.
"Yes," he answers. ❑
