ye get visitors from all
over," he says, ticking off
he places. "They see us
listed in the Key West
guide book and they're
eager to visit the syna-
gogue."
\_ This is a congregation
well aware that it serves
both tourists and resi-
dents. Every Friday night,
Mr. Einhorn goes through
a special welcome ritual.
, "I ask all the guests new
to the synagogue to stand
r-up and introduce them-
poselves," he relates.
One evening, two visi-
tors each stood up — and
it turned out both of them
) were not only from
\ Detroit, but were mem-
oers of the same congrega-
tion. "But they didn't even
know each other until
they met here in Key
West."
Naturally, they were
delighted to meet in this
unusual way. In fact, Jews
\ have been meeting in this
2 unusual town ever since
the fiist Jewish settler
landed here quite literally
by accident.
In
1884,
Joseph
Wolfson, a Russian immi-
\ grant, was sailing for New
,-Orleans when his ship
\ was wrecked on Key
West's treacherous coral
reefs. Instead of continu-
ing on to New Orleans,
, Mr. Wolfson settled in Key
I West and was soon fol-
>lowed by his brothers.
A classic Jewish immi-
% grant success story, the
Wolfsons ascended from
peddlers to financiers and
I, became one of the most
prosperous families in the
'\-Keys. In time, Joseph's
grand-nephew, Colonel
5 Mitchell Wolfson, bought
one of the oldest houses in
Key West, which had been
occupied by renowned nat-
uralist John James
Audubon. Mr. Wolfson
(- restored it with period
furniture and Audubon
memorabilia.
His effort is credited
with helping to spark
other historic renovation
projects in Key West.
'Among the leading restor-
ers is David Wolkowsky,
another Jewish resident,
who has restored over 200
of the city's historic build-
ings, including Captain
.\ Tony's, Florida's oldest
tavern.
The members of B'nai
j Zion are also very history-
' minded. Their congrega-
tion is over 100 years old,
and they are proud of that
fact. "There were Jews
here even before the con-
gregation was founded. E
