Ask For Mr. Michaels

Children's Defense Fund,
which many see as being the
anchor of the liberal wing of
the Democratic Party.
Mrs. Edelman, who is
black, said that she has had
numerous telephone conver-
sations with black and Jew-
ish leaders in the past week
to stress that the incident
should not be overplayed.
"It didn't help, but on the
other hand I have been say-
ing to my black friends that
this is an issue that needs no
further airing," she said,
adding that those leaders re-
sponded "positively." David
Twerksy, who wrote the ar-
ticle fo -r The Forward,
defended his work, saying
that he made numerous at-
tempts to contact Dr. Cole
through her office in Atlanta
and that the facts as re-
ported are not in dispute.
"I was very explicit with
the public relations person
and said, 'Look, maybe she is
a socialist now. I understand
those distinctions. Maybe
she will say, 'I used to be a
totalitarian and now maybe
I'm a social democrat.' I
know what those distinc-
tions are."
As for the concern locally,
he added, "It is legitimate
for the local Atlanta Jews to
want to limit the damage to
the pattern of relationships
with the back majority in
the city. It is illegitimate to
only look at this through
that prism."
He defended his article,
stating that, "she refuses to
say that she's changed. If
you read the Constitution
piece, she's passed off the
Venceramos as summer in
kibbutz."
He added that national
black and Jewish leaders

made it an issue between
their communities. "It's
totally irrelevant that it's a
black issue . .. Jesse
Jackson made it a black
issue," he said.
Last Friday afternoon, the
Rev. Jackson sought to
defuse the potential crisis by
holding a national con-
ference call with a number of
black and Jewish leaders.
"He was fantastic," said
one Jewish leader on the call
who asked not to be iden-
tified. "He said, 'the social
justice agenda facing our
country demands that blacks
and Jew stand together.' "
Congressman John Lewis,
D-Ga., said that the outpour-
ing from local Jewish groups
has made an impact on the
black community. "I have
had several people in elected
positions say to me that if
you see anyone in the Jewish
community, please convey to
them how grateful and how
thankful people in the black
community are to the mem-
bers of the Jewish commun-
ity for standing up and rally-
ing behind Johnnetta Cole."
For its part, the Forward is
defending its criticism of Dr.
Cole, suggesting in an edito-
rial that regardless of her
positive intergroup relations
role in Atlanta, her past
associations would make her
a potential national security
problem in the Clinton ad-
ministration.
It is not known whether
the current controversy
played a role in her decision,
but Dr. Cole says she does
not plan on leaving Spelman
in the near future. Last
week she told the New York
Times that there "is no pos-
sibility I will go to Washing-
ton at all." ❑

Arabs Are Killed
In Gaza Clashes

Jerusalem (JTA) — Violent
clashes erupted last week in
the Gaza Strip, killing two
brothers, as Israel lifted a
two-week ban on movement
into Israel proper.
Palestinian sources claim-
ed Israeli troops wounded
more than 40 during demon-
strations by rock-throwers in
Gaza and Khan Yunis. But
the Israeli announcement
spoke of only 12 hurt.
Despite the unrest, close to
24,000 Gazans crossed to
jobs in Israel.
But tensions remained
high in the strip, where six

Palestinians were killed in
riots sparked by Israel's ex-
pulsion of 415 Moslem fun-
damentalists.
Residents of Khan Yunis
say Ismael Abadin, 27, and
his brother Mohammed, 30,
were merely sitting at home
and not engaged in throwing
stones when they were killed
in the riots. Israeli military
sources could not immedi-
ately determine the cause of
their death.
Israel denies claims by Pa-
lestinians that changes have
been introduced into stan-
ding orders for opening fire.
