THE JEWISH NEWS

New York (JTA) — Stella'
Adler, the last remaining act-
ing member of a legendary
family of Yiddish stage and
screen performers and a
world-famous teacher of
Method acting, died Dec. 21
in Los Angeles. She was 91.
Ms. Adler, who spoke and
taught with grandeur ar
imperiousness, could coax air
actor to tears or shame and
then use those emotions to
better the performance.
Among her students were
Marlon Brando, Warren
Beatty and Robert De Niro.
The daughter of Jacob
Adler and the former Sarah
Levitsky, she was born Feb.
10, 1901, in Manhattan, in
the proverbial trunk, first
performing onstage at the
age of 4.
Her entire family per-
formed: her parents were
leaders of the Yiddish Art
Company and were consid-
ered the leading Yiddish
stage tragedians in the Unit-
ed States.
Her brothers, Luther„
Charlie, Abe and Jack, and
sisters, Celia, Nunia and Ju-
lia, also made names for
themselves on the Yiddish
stage. Luther and Stella)
formed a bridge to the Eng-
lish-speaking theater.
She was a member of the
Depression-era Group The-
ater with Harold Clurman,
whom she married and di-
vorced. She was also married
and divorced from Horace' )
Eleascheff. Her third hus%
band, Mitchell Wilson, a \
physicist and novelist, died
in 1973.
