She was 91. Ms. Adler, who spoke and taught with grandeur ar imperiousness, could coax air actor to tears or shame and then use those emotions to better the performance. Among her students were Marlon Brando, Warren Beatty and Robert De Niro. The daughter of Jacob Adler and the former Sarah Levitsky, she was born Feb. 10, 1901, in Manhattan, in the proverbial trunk, first performing onstage at the age of 4. Her entire family per- formed: her parents were leaders of the Yiddish Art Company and were consid- ered the leading Yiddish stage tragedians in the Unit- ed States. Her brothers, Luther„ Charlie, Abe and Jack, and sisters, Celia, Nunia and Ju- lia, also made names for themselves on the Yiddish stage.
