want to influence."
Up until 1988, Mr.
Sobel was known in the
entertainment community
for his expertise as a
music editor. His technical
skill on such films as La
Bamba, An Officer and a
Gentleman, White Nights,
The Flamingo Kid, and
Eddie and the Cruisers
were well regarded by
sound mixers, producers
and directors.
His original musical
score for the 1988 film
Alien Nation, starring
James Caan and Mandy
Patinkin, jump-started his
professional composing
career. He went on to com-
pose songs for the Dennis
Hopper film Backdrop, the
USA cable television film
Treacherous Crossing fea-
turing actress Lindsay
Wagner, and the 1992
release For the Boys with
Bette Midler.
"It was fantastic work-
ing with director/producer
Mark Rydell," said Mr.
Sobel. "And, yes, Bette
Midler is just as outra-
geous and just as nice in
person as she comes
across on stage."
He was disappointed
that For the Boys didn't
enjoy the critical success
he believes it deserves. "I
think Fox could have
launched a better market-
ing campaign. It was a
fine movie."
Mr. Sobel was brain-
storming with the produc-
tion crew of the movie
Defense List in 1990 at the
Skywalker Ranch in San
Rafael, Calif., when his
career got another boost.
A sound mixer from
Industrial Light & Magic
heard his work and was
impressed. He promoted
Mr. Sobel's talents to his
superiors at ILM, who in
turn hired Mr. Sobel to
compose music for their
simulation "movie ride"
Space Race.
ILM, owned by filmmak-
er George Lucas, is distin-
guished by the thrilling
special effects viewers
have come to associate
with Star Wars and other
Lucas films.
Mr. Sobel worked
against a storyboard to
produce music for Space
Race.
"These simulations use
the Showscan process,
where 60 frames of action
per second are used. In
regular movie theaters,
only 25 per frame are
shown," he said.
The only locations for
the technique are at the
Showscan headquarters in
Culver City, Calif., as well
as in Las Vegas,
Disneyland and one
amusement park in
Toronto.
His second simulation
project with ILM was
Alien Encounters. Unlike
Space Race, he had visu-
als to work with while
composing. The animation
is in the finishing stages
and should be unveiled to
the public in amusement
parks soon.
A broader public will
get to hear more of Mr.
Sobel's work next spring.
His latest contribution to
ILM is logo music for all
of Paramount Studios'
General Cinema theaters.
"Logo music is what I
call the concession music,"
said Mr. Sobel. "That's
what you hear before the
featured presentation."
For now, this former
Detroiter enjoys the best_
of both movie worlds.
"ILM has been Very flex-
ible. If I get an offer to
work on a movie, I'm free
to move to that for a
while."
He is also proud to be a
voting member the
Academy of Motion Pic-
ture Arts and Sciences,
and of his wife Connie and
their three sons. ❑
