violent crime that hits close
to home.
House alarms, car alarms,
security codes at work. We
learn to live with them. But
I can't help thinking that
even those of us unscathed
have had our humanity
mugged.
On Friday night, I learn in
synagogue that the building
had been broken into the
night before. The sanctuary
wasn't touched, only the of-
fice. A fax machine and

other office equipment had
been taken. What's frighten-
ing is that most congregants
felt spared. We got off easy.
Gom zu l'tovah.

But walking home in the
early winter darkness, I find
it more difficult to assuage
my 11-year-old son's fears.
And I remember Frank
Altman, who paid a tragic
price for believing in the
basic goodness of his fellow
man. III

Mortuary Refuses
Muslim Family

Los Angeles (JTA) — An
association of Orthodox
rabbis has strongly con-
demned a mortuary that
refused to assist a Muslim
family on the grounds that it
only served Jewish clients.
The case involves Fuad
and Fatme Albahri, whose
first son was stillborn at a
Los Angeles hospital in
September 1991.
According to the couple,
Mr. Albahri, a Jordanian
national, and his wife, a Pa-
lestinian, were too
distraught to handle the
mortuary arrangements
themselves and asked
relatives in San Diego to ar-
range for the transportation
and storage of the baby's
body.
The San Diego relatives
were advised to contact the
Malinow & Silverman mor-
tuary in Los Angeles. On
their fifth call, a mortuary
employee allegedly told
them that "We don't pick up
Muslim children. We only
pick up Jews."
Malinow & Silverman,
which was founded as a
family enterprise in 1927,
was sold eight years ago to
Texas-based Service
Corporation, Inc., the largest
American funeral corpora-
tion, with mortuaries, fu-
neral parlors and cemeteries
across the country.
A Service Corporation
spokesman acknowledged
that Malinow & Silverman
only performed services for
Jews, and that such a re-
striction was legal as long as
other mortuaries were
available.
But the Albahris claim
that they made it clear they
were asking only for the
pick-up, storage and
refrigeration of the dead

baby, and would later ar-
range for a Muslim religious
service on their own.
Last week, the Rabbinical
Council of California, an
association of Orthodox
rabbis in Southern Califon'.
nia, sharply condemned the
action and attitude of the
mortuary.
In a unanimous resolution
by its members, the Rab-
binical Council stated that it
wished to clarify "the er-
roneous impression that
Jewish tradition prohibits
Jewish mortuary from
assisting in the burial of a
non-Jew.
"In fact, the Talmud and
subsequent law codes ex-
plicitly require that Jews

assist in the burial of non-
Jews," the statement con<
tinued, an act which
"promotes a more peacefifi'
world."
The Albahri family has
now filed a $4 million
lawsuit against Malinow &
Silverman as compensation
for their pain, suffering and
humiliation.
Their lawyer, Michael Lin-
field, said that the mor-
tuary's action violated
California's anti-
discrimination laws and pro- •
fessional codes and that he
was seeking a court injunc-
tion to prevent such alleged
discrimination against non-
Jews in the future
