lementary students at
Akiva Hebrew Day
School are bear-ly able
to control themselves
when they talk about their
new pet. His name is Dov.
Now, Dov is not the
average, garden-variety
kind of pet. He's not a cute
little puppy or a precious
little kitten. He's not even
an interesting fish or a
talkative bird.
Dov is a bear.
Dov (Hebrew for "bear")
lives at the Detroit Zoo. And
he has been adopted by
Akiva's elementary school
students, who have done
everything from sell
lemonade to recycle bottles
to help care for their furry
friend.
The project started in the
library.
Phyllis Rochen is librarian
at Akiva. Looking to help
the children develop a new
tzedakah project that would
stress both concern for the
environment and for
animals, she suggested the
students consider the zoo's
"adopt-a-pet" program. They
agreed immediately.
Less concurrence came
when it was time to choose
their pet. The final three
possibilities were a polar
bear, a tiger and a monkey,
though some of the boys
rallied to the end for a boa
constrictor.
Democracy finally decided
the issue. Taking a vote, the
children opted for Dov.
To receive their official

"adoption papers," the
students had to raise $100.
In keeping with the Save the
Earth theme, they decided to
collect funds by recycling
bottles, many brought from
home. Others gave
tzedakah, and fourth-grader
Tara Piecznik of Southfield
opened a lemonade stand
with her brother. They rais-
ed $15.
Last week, four students —
selected by luck of the draw
— got to meet Dov on Zoo
Appreciation Day (usually
on a Saturday, though zoo of-
ficials let Akiva students
come on Friday). When they
saw the polar bear, Mrs.
Rochen said, "we just fell in
love with him."
"We called out his name
and he looked at us," said
Aviva Abrams, a sixth-
grader from Oak Park.
Also on the trip were Tara
