His name is Dov. Now, Dov is not the average, garden-variety kind of pet. He's not a cute little puppy or a precious little kitten. He's not even an interesting fish or a talkative bird. Dov is a bear. Dov (Hebrew for "bear") lives at the Detroit Zoo. And he has been adopted by Akiva's elementary school students, who have done everything from sell lemonade to recycle bottles to help care for their furry friend. The project started in the library. Phyllis Rochen is librarian at Akiva. Looking to help the children develop a new tzedakah project that would stress both concern for the environment and for animals, she suggested the students consider the zoo's "adopt-a-pet" program. They agreed immediately. Less concurrence came when it was time to choose their pet. The final three possibilities were a polar bear, a tiger and a monkey, though some of the boys rallied to the end for a boa constrictor. Democracy finally decided the issue. Taking a vote, the children opted for Dov. To receive their official Dov: a beary good friend. "adoption papers," the students had to raise $100. In keeping with the Save the Earth theme, they decided to collect funds by recycling bottles, many brought from home. Others gave tzedakah, and fourth-grader Tara Piecznik of Southfield opened a lemonade stand with her brother. They rais- ed $15. Last week, four students — selected by luck of the draw — got to meet Dov on Zoo Appreciation Day (usually on a Saturday, though zoo of- ficials let Akiva students come on Friday). When they saw the polar bear, Mrs. Rochen said, "we just fell in love with him." "We called out his name and he looked at us," said Aviva Abrams, a sixth- grader from Oak Park.
