Gershwin Music
At Book Fair

T'chiyah Hosts
Music Director

"Fascinating Rhythm: The
Collaboration of George and
Ira Gershwin" will take place
8 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Maple-
Drake Jewish Community
Center as part of the Jewish
Book Fair. The ticket price in-
cludes both the show and a
copy of Ms. Rosenberg's book,
Fascinating Rhythm.
Deena Rosenberg's book is
based on extensive conversa-
tions with Ira Gershwin and
work in his archives under
NEH and Rockefeller Founda-
tion grants: she is the only
writer and scholar who spent
considerable time with the
great lyricist in the last years
of his life.
Ms. Rosenberg is the foun-
ding chair of the Musical
Theatre Program at New
York University's Tisch
School of the Arts. She con-
ceives and narrates Gershwin
programs all over the country.
A resident of New York City
and Ann Arbor, she co-directs
the Musical Theatre Project,
which develops new musicals
with her husband.
Ms. Rosenberg will be
joined for the presentation by
Broadway performers Diane
Fratantoni, Adam Heller,
Larry Marshall and Jimmy
Roberts.

Anatoli Cheiniouk, music
director of Ars Poetica
Chamber Orchestra, will
discuss "Musical Freedom:
Communicating Without
Words" at Congregation
T'chiyah 7:45 p.m. Nov. 13 at
the synagogue, 1035 St.
Antoine.
A former soloist and
member of the Moscow
Chamber Orchestra from
1968 to 1980, Mr. Cheiniouk
was a founding member and
soloist of the Moscow Vir-
tuosi. He toured with both or-
chestras throughout the
world and made countless
recordings in both the USSR
and the United States.
Ars Poetica, which Mr.
Cheiniouk founded two years
ago, includes virtuoso musi-
cians from symphony or-
chestras including those in
Detroit, Cleveland and
Chicago.
The Sabbath service follow-
ing Mr. Cheiniouk's talk will
be led by Jeffrey Ram and Jor-
dan Rossen.
For information, call Sandy
Hansell, 559-1818; or Na-
thaniel Warshay, 545-6826.

In response to a national
appeal, the United Jewish
Foundation (UJF) has sent a
check for $34,000 to aid the
hurricane-stricken Jewish
community of South Florida.
The Foundation, partner-
ship organization of the
Jewish Federation
of
Metropolitan
Detroit,
approved funds requested by
the national Council of
Jewish Federations, of which
the local federation is a
member. Other communities
across the country also
answered the emergency
appeal.
The contribution will go
toward helping the Jewish
community rebuild its homes
and institutions in the wake
of Hurricane Andrew.
Millions of dollars in damage
was reported by Detroit's
sister federations in Florida,
particularly Miami, where
many poor and elderly Jews
live.
The contribution was made
from the UJF general fund,
which comes from contribu-
tions and investments.
