USCJ Sets
Conference

Rabbi Moshe Edelman,
newly appointed director of
leadership development and
associate director of regional
and extension activities of
United Synagogue of Conser-
vative Judaism in New York,
will be the keynote speaker
and installing officer at a
Leadership Conference Nov. 8
at Congregation B'nai Moshe.
Rabbi Edelman will lead a
workshop focusing on devel-
oping leadership qualities. He
pioneered efforts to expand
synagogue membership and
involvement and developed
creative programs which
resulted in increased obser-
vance of mitzvot.
A second workshop will be
led by four participants from
Michigan congregations who
have attended the IMUN pro-
gram, a training institute for
lay leaders. They are Terry
Brown of Congregation Beth
Shalom, Oak Park; Sidney
Pachter of Congregation
Ahavas Israel, Grand Rapids;
and Leonard Wanetik and
Calvin Weiss of Congregation
B'nai Moshe, West
Bloomfield.
The program will end with
the installation of regional of-
ficers and lunch. Officers to
be installed are president,
Sharlene Ungar, Congrega-
tion B'nai Moshe; vice
presidents, Richard Berg,
Congregation Beth Shalom,
Oak Park; Sue Himelhoch,
Beth Israel Congregation,
Flint; and Larry Rockind,
Adat Shalom Synagogue,
Farmington Hills; secretary,
Sidney Pachter, Congregation
Shaarey Zedek; and im-
mediate past president, Larry
Lando, Congregation of
Moses, Kalamazoo.
The conference is open to all
members of Conservative con-
gregations. For information,

Tapestry, a program for
adults of all ages, will take
place 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek.
The evening will begin with
a Havdalah service. At-
tendees will then be able to
choose from 10 areas of in-
terest. Dr. Mark Evans, a
reproduction specialist, will
speak on Ethics of Respon-
sibility. Rabbi Rod Glogower,
a talmudist, will discuss
where and how Judaism fits
into the recent technology of
gene therapy; Dr. Lester
Weiss will discuss his every-
day experience in gene
technology.

"U.S./Israeli Politics" led by
Raymond Tanter; "Arguing
with God, a Jewish Tradition"
led by Rabbi Groner; "Jewish
Sexual Ethics" led by Rabbi
William Gershon; "Women in
Judaism" led by Rabbi Greta

Silverman; kosher cooking
(hors d'ouvres) demonstrated
by Paul Kohn; "Skinheads,
Neo-Nazis and Jew Haters —
How to Teach Our Children
and Ourselves to Respond"
led by Richard Lobenthal;
"The Mystique of the Dead
Sea Scrolls" led by Marvin
Kasoff. Also "Songs and Bur-
rekas — Journey Into the
World and Traditions of the
Sephardim" led by Rabbi
Bitran, Cantor Najman and
Raquel Pomerantz Gershon;
"The Stresses and Challenges
of Grandparenting in Con-
temporary Society" led by Dr.
Leonard Kaplan and Harlene
Appelman.
The evening will end with
a dessert afterglow. There is

Israeli Poet
Gives Lecture

Karen Alkaly-Gut will be
the speaker in a lecture titl-
ed, "Images of the Gulf War
in Israeli Poetry" 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 28 at Congregation Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses.
The Israeli poet, critic, and
lecturer at Aviv Universi-
ty will offer a review of and
commentary on the literary
reaction to Saddam's Scud at-
tacks.
Admission is free, refresh-
ments will be served. Co-
sponsors are the Cohn-
Haddow Center for Judaic
Studies, Midrasha - Agency
for Jewish Education and
Congregation Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses' Adult Educa-
tion Committee.
