Italian Artist
O.K. Harris/David Klein
Gallery will display the work
of artist Bettina Werner in a
one-person show through Oct.
31. Ms. Werner is a young ar-
tist from Milan, Italy, who
has shown her work exten-
sively throughout Europe.
The artist combines salt
crystals, resin and oil pig-
ment on wood panels. Ms.
Werner uses different sizes of
salt crystals to alter the tex-
ture of her work. The oil
pigments range from subtle
browns to intense reds and
yellows. The work is displayed
in a number of different ways
— some pieces are arranged
as a narrow vertical column,
others are more expansive in
size.
The artist's presence is
manifested in her manipula-
tion of materials which car-
ries the viewer through a
minimalistic combination of
texture and color. The in-
fluence of artists such as
Donald Judd, Frank Stella,
and Antoni Tapies is ap-
parent in the clean shape and
repetition of subtle form
which enhances the strength
of each piece.
O.K. Harris/David Klein
Gallery is at 430 North Wood-
ward, Birmingham. The
gallery hours are Tuesday
through Saturday, 11-6 p.m.,
with extended hours to 8:30
p.m. on the first Thursday of
each month.

Ceramic Exhibit
At Habatat/Shaw
Habatat/Shaw Gallery will
exhibit the work of George
Timock and Michaela
Dicosola through Oct. 31.
George Timock, a graduate
of the Cranbrook Academy of
Art and associate professor of
ceramics at the Kansas City
Art Institute, explores the
vessel format and the process
of raku. Mr. Timock's vessels
are fabricated in parts, enabl-
ing him to work in a scale not
normally associated with
raku. By juxtaposing soft
edges to hard lines, resting a
seemingly large mass on a
small point, and contradic-
ting the interior of the form
to the exterior profile, Mr.
Timock is able to create sen-
suous, seemingly organic
vessels.
Michaela Dicosola received
her Master of Fine Arts from
the University of Florida,
Coral Gables, and is an assis-
tant professor of ceramics at
Florida Atlantic University,
Boca Raton. Ms. Dicosolas'
sculpture comments on the
numerous societal ills and
problems that concern her.
